    1. [NCCATAWB-L] Long Island
    2. Sam Beattie
    3. I am researching from Australia, so please pardon my ignorance regarding all things US. I am researching a woman who was born around 1819 in (she stated) "Long Island, America". I have since found that there are 10 Long Islands in the US, one being in Catawba County, NC. Her name was Eliza Deans and she was (reputedly) a "woman of colour". Can anyone give me some direction as to how I might find her birth, etc? Thanks Sam (in Melbourne)

    3. Two useful web sites. The second came to me from another list but I've checked it and it works. The first is a national manuscript collection site with a search engine. Search for your surname; you might be surprised. It's at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html Then, If you have an ancestor that you suspect might have been in the War of 1812, chances are you'll find him on this database. http://www.sierrahome.com/familytree/records As I understand it, this database is only going to be available for free for the next two days.

I can find nothing in Burke County register of deeds office, however, some kind soul (whose e-mail I have lost) said they found a record for this marriage in Burke County, NC. I took a look at your webpage but, as you said, it's not complete yet and they weren't on there. I would be MOST grateful if you happen across anything for either of them. It is so hard when you can't even trace back info on your grandparents. I feel sure if I can find info on them, a whole world of genealogy will open up to me and my family. ... Warmest Regards... 1. [NCCATAWB-L] Marriage Bonds
    2. -- I have created a web page for Marriage Bond Index of NC 1741-1868 <A HREF="http://marriagebondofnc.homestead.com/Home.html">marriagebondofNC </A> http://marriagebondofnc.homestead.com/Home.html This page is not complete and will not be complete for several months. There are over 8,000 Bride and 8,000 Groom microfilm pages that list all marriage bonds for all counties of NC. I will add new surnames weekly so please don't get discouraged if you do not see the surname you are looking for. I have discovered that once you obtain the Index page that you are looking for it is easier to contact the NC Archives and get a copy of the original Marriage Bond. If you would like a specific Surname added to the page you may send me an e-mail and I will put that name on my list to add ASAP. All I ask is that you send one e-mail per Surname. You may send as many Surnames as you like, but please do so separately so that I may easily alphabetize my list that I take with me. In the Subject area put MB of NC (this will get my attention) In the body of the e-mail type the surname you would like added in ALL CAPS. Best of Luck to you all in your search for your ancestors. J. Altenhoff

    3. Can anyone help with this lookup request? Forrest Orndorff List Owner -----Original Message----- From: Peter Coyl [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2000 10:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: {not a subscriber} lookup request I was wondering if someone could look up a map or reference to someone on a map. The book is called "Platting Land Grants and Deeds" by James W. Miller. It was published by the Catawba Genealogical Society on November 28, 1989. I was wondering if Adam Bolch/Bolick/Bolig shows up on one of those maps. He would have one (maybe 2) land grants about 1772. If he does, what page (or map) does he show on. Any other information that the map shows would be helpful as well. Thanks for your help. Peter D.
