Hambrey Banks is my gggfather born in 1851. I found him in the 1880 Pitt County NC census married to Flora (Wiggins) listed as Mulattos at ages 29 & 24. I'm also finding in Pitt death records Hambrick, Hamlet, Hambrick, Hambut Banks. I'm still investigate wheter these other Pitt County Banks are related to my Hambrey. These names are so unusual possibly they are names given by a slave owner. Did any of your relatives own slaves in the Pitt County area?
