    1. 10 Most Historic Events in Catawba County
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Hi folks, I have been asked to help supply a list of "The 10 Most Historic Events in Catawba County in the Past 125 year." (since 1879) I need your help to help put this together. I think this project deserves some serious attention. This post is directed to folks who know and care for our Catawba Vally heritage and who might contribute to this effort. Should you have access to microfilm, the "Newspapers in Catawba County" http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/Newspapers.htm you might choose to contribute. The Newton Library has most of the central Catawba County newspaper micro film. The Patrick Beaver Library generally has most of the Hickory papers. While there is some double coverage, they pretty well cover the county. Please be willing to help transcribe some of these old newspapers. They hold the memories of our Catawba Valley ancestors. Let me suggest a few events: · The Miracle of Hickory (Great Polio Epidemic of 1944) · NC Governer Clyde Hoey Visits Conover (1940) · Hickory’s First Airplane Flight (1912) · Sunday School Murder (1908) · The Great Flood (1916) · Lenoir-Ryne College forerunner founded (1890) · Concordia College destroyed by fire, death of Dr. Fred T. Foard (1933) Please add to this list, as many events you can think of. --Derick

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SSB.2ACE/847.1 Message Board Post: Per my grandmother Adelaide Mc Collister Barlow: "William Rankin Kibler, the son of Michael Kibler and Catherine Lawrance Kibler, was born in Burke county, North Carolina February 12, 1829. He was married to Harriett Mc Elrath of Burke county, North Carolina. William, surgeon of a regment in the Confederate army, was an aid on General Caliborne's staff and received a wound at Murfeesboro, Tennessee. That was really the cause of his death years afterward at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jacob Dailey (Jane M. Kibler) at Cross Plains, Alabama. He is buried at the old graveyard there and has a confederate iron cross on his grave." I have an original picture and would be happy to send you a copy.

    2. Debbie Spencer
    3. Julie - such a kind gesture regarding the newspaper collection that you located for Absolum Sherrill and his wife Sarah McAlpin. The problem that I'm encountering is that your url is from Ancestry.com, thereby requiring a subscription to their databases. I do happen to have a paid subscription, but am concerned about those who don't... When I clicked on your url and type in the required person to search, it takes you to the ancestry.com signup page vs. data on the newspaper information that you provided. I'm a Sherrill and don't have any information on this couple... It looks like great information. Thanks so much for your help - it was really kind of you to post this considering that it's not your family! I sure appreciate any help that you can provide.
