I am pleased to announce that the Catawba County, NC Black Heritage web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatab/ has been adopted by Robin Barger. Robin had done a marvelous job with the Maiden, NC web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccmaide/. I expect she will make the Black Heritage page just as great. Both of these pages are a part of the NCGenWeb family and are sponsored by RootsWeb. Please join me in wishing Robin good luck in this undertaking. Submissions or messages of cheer may be sent to her at <tahda@bellsouth.net>. --Derick
You and I have spoken before and I am still unable to find the line from which my Rev. Israel Hollar (er) (b. 1822) of Lincoln/Wilkes/Iredell Counties descends. In the 1870 census, Israel had a Sarah Holler living with him and she was 102 years old, thereby being born about 1768. I do not know who she was. Since the names Sarah and Sally are often interchangeable, I continue to wonder whether this could be Sally Shue. Israel relayed the story of John Holler & "the boat incident" directly to his grandson who was a brother to my grandfather. (His daughter wrote several letters to me before she died and told to me the stories which her father had passed on to her) Israel's father's name was John but I understand there were several John Holler's in the area. I continue to contact you occasionally as you seem to have a very good knowledge about the Holler lines and I continue to hope that you may have run across something about my line of Hollar (er). Do you have any thoughts about the possibility that this may have been Sally Shue? Would the 1768 birthdate for Sarah Holler be in line with what you know about the Sally Shue story? Thank you for bearing with me. I have struggled to find some type of firm connection to my John Holler and Sally Shue. I would at least like to determine which John Holler belongs to me and a little something about him. John - I'm researching Parker's and would like to chat with you about any possible connections. Please email me offline since this email list is actually for Catawba Co, which is not the areas that I'm working on. This Martin HOLLER puzzle is one that deserves to settled. I don't know how many Martin Hollers there are but here's a chance to put it in the spotlight. I have taken what everyone has sent me and have archived it. I have added what I have and here is a summary: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/martinholler.htm This can also be found from: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ccgsfam.htm Included are two additional Martin HOLLERs listed in Immigrants to Pennsylvania --Derick

The old fair grounds were where the present day Hickory High School stands in the Viewmont area. I believe the stock sale was at the same place every Thursday. It was later relocated to the Sweetwater Road (now Lowes). Daddy used to take me with him and I remember people selling things out of their car trunks. That was before the days of "Flea Markets". Does the carnival that was always held with the Old Soldier's Reunion count? And the Catawba County Fair? Mother always took us to the carnival after the Reunion. I got to ride the pony and win wonderful glass beads. I can still smell the sawdust and cotton candy. I can't remember where the fair was held before the new fair grounds were built but we would go at night with mother and daddy. My brother and I wore matching plaid shirts with our cowboy belts. We thought we were something 40 + years ago. Cynthia
