    1. Early Caswell County Mills
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Boman, Bowman, Roberts, Elam, Wilson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RSB.2ACE/1675 Message Board Post: If someone on this list is an expert on the locations of early Caswell County mills, I am seeking information about the mill jointly owned by Robert Bowman and Simon Roberts. Robert Bowman was a son of Royall Bowman, and Simon Roberts was a son-in-law of Royall Bowman, having married his daughter Nancy Bowman in Charlotte County, VA 3 January 1787. (1787 appears to be the year in which Royall Bowman first acquired land in Caswell County, NC. Previously he had lived in Charlotte County, VA, to which he had moved in 1771 from Prince Edward County, VA. Prior to 1753 records for Royall Bowman and his father Robert Bowman are in Amelia County, VA.) Robert Bowman and Simon Roberts sold a mill located on 25 acres of land along Country Line Creek to Barkley Elam of Mecklenburg County for $1,200 on 7 July 1799 (Caswell County Deed Book C, pages 214-15). A little more than a year later Elam was dead and his executors resold this mill property to John Wilson of Halifax County, VA ! (Caswell County Deed Book C, pages 296-97). Both deeds refer to it as "mill" property. It is not clear when Robert Bowman and Simon Roberts acquired this property, but it may have been taken by them as their share of Royall Bowman's estate when it was settled in 1791.
