That would explain a lot of the wandering ways of some of his offspring and the difficulty this adds in tracing them. I descend from Benjamin Willis, Sr. whom I believe is Henry's son. Apparently these guys all named their sons and their nephews after their brothers and fathers, to the point it's hard to differentiate except by date. In the 1800 Rutherford Co. census there are only household heads names and age ranges for others in the household; but Henry is there, I think, with a female who is, like him, in the 45+ range, and two other females (I'm assuming daughters) in the 16-25 range. That's his whole household. But there are several other men with young families nearby, some of whom have to be his sons. My Benjamin is there, along with James, John, David, Joseph, Stephen, and Peter. Peter isn't a given name that comes down in the lines I'm familiar with, so I'm not sure he's! part of that clan. Any ideas on these others?

Hi, In the NC Archives in Raleigh, and published in Clark's NC Colonial Records is a document showing that Thomas Rice was appointed Ensign in the NC Continental Line. The records also state that he died while on the march North to Georgetown,MD. Also, check the PRO,PROCAT search engine for Rice. There are documents in London referring to some Rice's who died at Sea. THOMAS RICE & FAMILY: ONE-TIME SHERIFF OF CASWELL, NORTH CAROLINA: WHAT IS HIS HEIRATGE? WHICH RICE FAMILY LINE IS IT: MASSACHUSETTS OR VIRGINIA? THOMAS RICE, B. ABOUT 1732, AT NEW KENT OR HANOVER CO. VIRGINIA, D. 1805, CASWELL NORTH CAROLINA, MARRIED MARCY. Over the years, I have gathered books, bought family CD’s, looked up records, and today I am just as confused as when I started my Rice family research! Over time I became painfully aware that an ancestor of mine, Thomas Rice, was not part of the family line of Edmund Rice, of Massachusetts. This after connecting my Rice family line to the wrong Virginia Rice family, which lead me back too the Massachusetts’ Edmund Rice family, and because of this mistake all the years of research I have done on the Massachusetts Rice families is all useless to me now. There is a lot of confusion about the linking Thomas Rice, of Caswell, North Carolina, who married Marcy, with the Thomas Rice, born at Sudbury, Massachusetts, who married Joyce. If one connects their research to this Sudbury, Massachusetts, Rice family it will lead ones research directly back to the family of Deacon Edmund Rice of Massachusetts. Although, some of the descendants of Edmund Rice did eventually migrate to Virginia, this is a totally different and independent Rice family line that migrated to Virginia long after my Rice family did. It is because of this common ground that many researchers such as me unintentionally combine the two lines. I have always known that if one will trace their Rice family heritage back far enough you will end up in one of the two Rice family lines, either in the Massachusetts or Virginia Rice family lines. With time, I have come to understand, that at this time there was at least two separate Rice family lines in Virginia at the ver! y same time, one Rice family line which is my Rice family line, who is not part of the Edmund Rice family, and the other Rice family line which is. I am sure this problem is some kind of mixture of both of the Massachusetts and Virginia Rice family lines, but my biggest problem is; that in most of the popular research of today, that I have seen my ancestor is listed in both camps! One author or researcher will state that my Rice family ancestor belongs to the Massachusetts Rice’s, while the next will say, oh no, he belongs to the Virginia Rice family. I have plenty of documentation to attest to this ancestor, Thomas Rice, in census, land, marriage, and will records, a long with many references by good authors. This Thomas Rice was a Sheriff of Caswell County, North Carolina, before 1789, and died there as well. Because I believe it is at this precise point with this Thomas Rice that I go off the bead, so to speak, with my Rice family research, I would like to focus my questions in regard to this Thomas Rice, his family and anc estors. I am big on sources, but I do hope you will think that you have the knowled! ge about this Rice family line to help straighten me out? Sincerely, Berna David Hunter bdhunter@netins.net Gravette, AR. >> Hello Berna, I have not seen a response to your query, so I will attempt to provide you with some information regarding this one Thomas Rice family. I am a descendant of Rebecca Rice Windsor, daughter of the Thomas Rice who was often referred to has Thomas (CB) Rice because he resided on Cabbin Branch in Caswell County. When he died he did not mention a wife in his will, which indicated that she had predeceased him. I have never seen a document which named his wife as Marcey, although he did have a daughter by that name. Some confusion exists in the records of Caswell for Thomas Rice, as there were two who had arrived somewhat simulaneously, both from Hanover County, Va. The second Thomas Rice was referred to as Thomas Rice, Esq. I personally have not determined which one of the two was the sheriff of Caswell. I have seen two DAR applications which have entered our Thomas Rice as a sheriff, and as a soldier in the NC Revolutionary forces which would have given him both civil and military service credit. The records of Hanover County are essentially non-existant for the time period under consideration, so it is difficult to document all that is proposed for these two. There was a much earlier Thomas Rice and his wife, Marcey, who owned a small plantation in what is now the lower part of Hanover County, Va. He left his family to return England to claim an inheritance, and was never heard from. His grandson, the Rev. David Rice left a published volume in which he accounted this story of the elder Thomas' fate, and recorded the children of the couple. The volume can be found in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and was published in 1824. It is believed that Thomas (CB) Rice was a son of John Rice, born18 September 1698, primarily because Thomas named his eldest son, John. Thomas also had a brother, John Rice, who had accompanied him to settle in Caswell. This John was sometimes referred to as "Old John" to distinguish him from Thomas' son. The other Thomas is thought to be a son of Thomas Rice, born 24 June 1689; and thus considered to be first cousins, as their fathers would have been brothers. This Thomas was married twice; and had a propensity for naming his children with names beginning with the letter "Z". I am not sure that this gives you the exact information which you were seeking. If you have further questions, I will be glad to offer some additional assistance, if I feel competent to do so. Below is some additional discussion regarding the original Rice of our line here on the American Continent. Because I believe it is at this precise point with this Thomas Rice that I go off the bead, so to speak, with my Rice family research, I would like to focus my questions in regard to this Thomas Rice, his family and ancestors. I am big on sources, but I do hope you will think that you have the knowled! ge about this Rice family line to help straighten me out? Sincerely, Berna David Hunter bdhunter@netins.net Gravette, AR. Any information regarding my question, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am searching for her on a line with her second husband Edward Doyle. I found a Benjamin Ransom in the 1790 Census for Caswell co NC who is probably a sibling or her father. The name Benjamin is used in later generations so I expect it fits in there somewhere. Thank you for any help on the Ransom line.
