    3. This information may not help on the Baynes / Lea discussion but I will share it any way. As you know my primary research is on the Walker Family of NC/TN This is what I have on these to surnames in my database. 1. Parthenia BAYNES was born on 28 FEB 1815 in Orange County, NC. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Orange County, NC. In the 1850 census Parthena was 38 years old (which does not agree with her grave marker) She died on 24 JUN 1878 or 1888 in Orange County, NC. She was buried in Cross Roads Cemetery, Alamance Co., NC. 3. I am also interested in this discussion, as I have similar roots to K. McGee. Thomas WILLIAMSON was the first husband of Martha JONES. Their daughter Elizabeth married Colonel John WILLIAMS. These were my six-great grandparents Colonel John and Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth married Azariah GRAVES (1768-1850). Azariah's parents were John Herndon GRAVES and Isabella LEA, daughter of James LEA and Ann HERNDON. I am descended from this line through Azariah's and Elizabeth's daughter Frances and her husband Josiah SETTLE. Pat Hansen -----Original Message----- From: K. 2. In a message dated 8/29/02 2:16:42 AM, veeb@getfreeinternet.co.uk writes: << Hello, John and Shelly and anyone else studying TAPSCOTTs The Nancy TAPSCOTT you are discussing was Nancy4 (Henry3, James2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT and was the same person as Nancy5 (Nancy4, Henry3, Edney2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT. >> Hello Lin and all, I SHOULD have caught all of this before now, but am feeling rather fragmented since I am attempting to get ALL of my various family data together to get it on a rootsweb site. As I am getting to a point where something is not exactly clear, I am having to seek out clarifying data. Now that this issue is resolved, there is now the issue of this tie between these Tapscotts and the Baynes who are descendants of the William Swift and Frances Waddy family of Caswell. Shelly's family has two Lea connections, one which takes her back to the Swifts, to a daughter of William Park Swift and his wife Sarah Tate: Mary Street Swift who married John Lea, son of Henry Lea and his wife, Mary Street. [YES THERE ARE A LOT OF COUSIN MARRIAGES HERE!] Mary Street Swift is a sister of my Frances Tate Swift who married John Windsor Tapscott. Her other Lea connection was with the marriage of Swananoah Lea with her Thomas Baynes. Swananoah Lea was a daugher of Benjamin Lea who was sister to Elizabeth Lea, wife of Thomas Jefferson Tapscott, son of John Windsor Tapscott. We know that John Windsor Tapscott was cousin to the blind, Nancy Tapscott, by way of her mother Nancy, daughter of Henry Tapscott of Caswell. But that does not give a close family tie of blind Nancy to the Baynes/Swift family. [By the way the Baynes are of the same family who had the Old Baynes County store in Caswell] There MUST be another family connection, but WHAT? Now I have discovered that William Swift had a marriage prior to his marriage to Frances Waddy, which brought three daughters into his family, Mary, Margaret, and Sarah. Margaret and Sarah were married to Williamsons, whose descendants settled into Caswell; Mary was married to James George in Goochland County, VA; and my intention at this point is to determine if this connects to the George/Ann Edney Tapscott marriage in Virginia; and, hopefully, at the same time locate the first wife of William Swift, who may have been a Park, another Waddy, or a Street, judging from the naming of the children of Mary, Margaret and Sarah. Also, our Thomas Rice of Caswell may have been the Thomas Rice who helped to inventory the estate of the Rev. William Swift in Hanover County, VA. in 1838. The genealogical adage that for every "new" person one adds to a lineage, that creates at least two more problems, has proven itself many times over on these families. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

    3. Hello, John and Shelly and anyone else studying TAPSCOTTs The Nancy TAPSCOTT you are discussing was Nancy4 (Henry3, James2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT and was the same person as Nancy5 (Nancy4, Henry3, Edney2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT. The 26 May 1832 (probated July 1832) will of Henry3 (James2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT (Caswell Co NC Will Book M page 188) names (in this order) "my son Samuel Tapscott", "my son William Tapscott", "my daughter NANCY TAPSCOTT", "my daughter Susannah Tapscott" and "my son James Tapscott". The 17 September 1839 will of John4 (Henry3, Edney2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT (Caswell Co NC Will Book O page 1), who died without issue of his own, names the testator's "niece Bucey TAPSCOTT daughter of Henry TAPSCOTT". (Lin adds: Nancy/"Bucey" was John's niece by way of being a daughter of Nancy TAPSCOTT TAPSCOTT sister of this testator John TAPSCOTT. That sister was born a TAPSCOTT and married her cousin Henry TAPSCOTT. This will also names John's niece Susannah TAPSCOTT daughter of Henry TAPSCOTT, so "Bucey" can only be Nancy.) The 26 December 1846 (probated 1847) will of William4 (Henry3, James2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT (Caswell Co NC Will Book P page 394) names the testator's brother James Tapscott, his brother Henry C. Tapscott, his brother Samuel Tapscott, his sister Susan and his sister NANCY. 1850 US Census NC Caswell Co page 253B line 1 dwelling 1215 family 1219: TAPSCOTT Jas 47 born Caswell Co NC farmer value RE $700 TAPSCOTT Henry C. 50 born Caswell Co NC farmer value RE $280 TAPSCOTT NANCY 56 born Caswell Co NC "blind" TAPSCOTT Susan 53 born Caswell Co NC John, I took this straight off the census page on a microfilm which I own and am looking at right now. It definitely says Henry, plainly. John Fox wrote: >Now I have to find to whom these Tapscots belonged. They all seem to be >siblings, from their close ages. They certainly were siblings. They were the youngest four of the six children of record of Henry3 (James2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT and his wife nee Nancy4 (Henry3, Edney2, Henry1) TAPSCOTT. The other two of the six were Samuel TAPSCOTT (c1790-1857), who was head of his own family over in Rockingham Co NC in this census, and William TAPSCOTT (c1793- c1847), who had died before this census and whose will I have abstracted for you above. I do not find Nancy in the 1860 US Census in Caswell Co NC, but Shelly, THANK YOU for finding her in the 1860 in Haywood Co TN! Shelly, this 65-year-old unmarried and presumed childless owner of $8,500 worth of real estate Nancy TAPSCOTT is a PRIME CANDIDATE to have a juicy probate file. Have you checked Haywood Co TN records for a will? If you find no will, check for a probate file in which her heirs-at-law (nieces and nephews etc., and perhaps these Bayneses) went to court to get her land. If you don't find a probate file, then at the very least I would expect you could find a deed in which her heirs-at-law sell her land. There is much still to learn about her siblings and her nieces and nephews. By 1860, her eldest brother Samuel TAPSCOTT (c1790-1858) had died in Alamance Co NC leaving a will (which I have not seen), her brother William TAPSCOTT (c1793-c1847) had died in Caswell Co NC leaving a will which I have seen (I abstracted it above), her brother Henry C. TAPSCOTT (c1800-1858) had died in Alamance Co NC leaving a will (according to you, John! I have not seen this will but would like to) and her brother James TAPSCOTT had also died (we know this because the 10 May 1857 Alamance Co NC will of Samuel Tapscott is said to refer to "the estate of my deceased brother James"). My feeling is that if Nancy's spinster sister Susan TAPSCOTT were still living in 1860, she wouldn't be very far away from Nancy. Shelly, do you find a Susan or Susannah TAPSCOTT aged about 63 years with a North Carolina birthplace in the 1860 US Census in Haywood Co TN? Do let us know what you find, won't you?! When I had looked at the census records before I could have sworn that this Nancy Tapscott was listed as an older person.. as you said in her 50's maybe, but when I looked on the copy of the Haywood County Census Records then it said 23 yrs , female and it mentions nothing of her being blind (there is a space to mark such a thing on the TN census) . Who was Nancy Tapscott and why was she living with the John W. Baynes family in 1860 in Haywood Co., Tn? Perhaps Sarah felt obligated to care for this person? Diggin up bones in Tn Shelly B. Langley

I have seen varying descriptions of this Nancy as being born blind, and being 65 years of age. I really need to see the Census records to be sure of what they really intended. When they got to Haywood Co., they bought 184 !/4 acres for the Sum of $400.00 on January18th, 1846. I was looking at the census record I have a copy of and the Tapscott that I have listed is a Black Female age of 23 yrs old. Her name is Nancy Tapscott. I'm not sure why they would have listed her name and not the names of the other slaves? I'm sorry I was mistaken on the information I had given you before.. has been awhile since I looked at the records. This is listed on page 54 of the Haywood County 1860 census records. I am very closely studying Sarah's mother as being Sarah Street, daughter of Hannah Waddy and John Street. I also have a strong hunch that your John Lea's mother was Mary Street, sister to Sarah Street Tate. I am a descendant of Frances Tate Swift, also a daughter of William Park Swift and Sarah Tate. Frances Tate Swift married John Windsor Tapscott; one of their sons, Thomas Jefferson Tapscott married Elizabeth "Betty" Lea whom I believe to be connected to your Henry Lea's family. Hannah Waddy was half-sister to Frances Waddy Swift, wife of William Swift, JR. William Swift and Frances Waddy were parents of William Park Swift. As you can see, we have a lot to discuss.
