Yes I had more Elmores that went to IL. Not quite sure where all the locations are but the families that went are consistent with traveling in a "pack." They moved en mass! From what I have read the Indians north of Louisville weren't the friendliest. I have a Jacob V born 12-19-1828 I'm sure in Allendale, and died 4-19-1910 in Mason City or county, IL. He married a Sarah Hill. Jacob was the son of Peter Elmore and Eliz Victor. I also have William Elmore, son of Peter and Eliz, who married Elizabeth Town, Henrietta Town and Elizabeth Salsman Elkins, and had kids by them all. William Elmore and Elizabeth Elkins had children together and a couple of those went to IL. There was Welby who first went to Nebraska and then to IL. There was Hestle who is buried in Princeton, IL. And I'm working on others matching the kids up to the right parent.

The brother of your Lydia, my William, had a daughter Elizabeth who married William Griggs Greene. I believe they lived for awhile in Green County, KY before migrating to Menard County. Did you line of Elmores stay in KY or go to IL? I know what you mean about working on this line. I totally quit for nearly a year as I became so frustrated with some of the other family researchers. There is quite a controversy over the father of William Sr. I had a theory which was based on an article I found in an old issue of the Piedmont Lineages magazine (NC/VA genealogy publication). Others kept telling me that this was wrong, but could not offer substantial proof. It all seemed to be based on previous research of others, but there were no citations recorded on any of it. Let me know if you branch of Elmores went on to Menard County, and I will keep an eye out there when I research. Thanks for the info on their children
I am trying to plot land records from the later 1700's and early 1800's in Caswell County. Many deeds mention Hillsborough Road and Jourdans Creek. A 1799 deed mentions Stoney Creek and Hillsborough Road. A 1809 deed mentions Tom's Creek and Hillsborough Road. A 1855 deed mentions Jordans Creek and both sides of the road from Yanceyville to Hillsboro. On the G. P. Stout map of 1977 depicting Caswell County in 1777 he shows Jordan's Creek in the southern county flowing into Orange County (present day Alamance), I believe that creek is today called Hughes Mill Creek, but he doesn't show any road nearby. Would this be the same Jordan's [Jourdan's, Jurdan's] Creek mentioned in the early deeds? What present day road would be representative of the Hillsborough Road(s) mentioned in those deeds? Is there a better map source to locate the early creeks and roads? Thank you.

NC and some records say VA. He died in Menard, IL, married in KY. 3. Jesse born 1760-1780 4. John brn abt. 1777 my notes say VA. I would be that or NC. I'm trying to untangle the entire elmore chain for green co and trust me, it's intricate. The family connections are very interesting and how they name their offspring is noteable for using other family names such as green, warren, etc. I'm working from known and proven sources. I wanted to let everyone know we are about to completely redo the Caswell Co. GenWeb page and I wanted to ask if anyone has ANYTHING they would be willing to share, we would love to have it. The Caswell Co. page has been neglected for some time and I would really like to make it a useful resource once again. I will start posting all the Caswell Co. marriage bonds - probably later today, along with a new home page. Over the next couple of weeks, I hope to also get the 1880 Census transcribed and moved over. I am lucky to presently be living in Houston, Tx. where we have a great genealogy library so I should be able to transcribed many records in the coming weeks and months. Among things I would REALLY like to have now are early photos of Yanceyville and surrounding countryside. If anyone has a photo of an old tobacco barn, I would like to have it also. I love some of the old tobacco barns and they are becoming rare. Thanks for anything you may be in a position to share. Let me know if I can help anyone. I am not from Caswell Co. but was raised right across the line in Alamance Co. so I do not know all the Caswell families as I do those in surrounding counties so I need all the help I can get. One more thing, does anyone know how I can contact someone with the Caswell Co. Historical Society. I want to buy a copy of the books they may have an get permission from them to do individual lookups. In the meantime, if anyone has any books they are willing to do lookups in, I would love to have your information to post. Nola nduffy@patch.net

The part you left out of William's will from your e-mail was "to My Daughter Sarah Graham I give twenty five Dollars". But we're not quite sure who Sarah is! Others mentioned in the will for sure are "daughter Charity Allin Davis", the heirs of "Lidda Elmore", son Edward Graham, son William Graham, son George Graham, son John Graham, son Peter Graham, "Polly Elmores heirs", and grandson Herrington Graham. I have been in contact with another family researcher who has as an ancestor son Berryman Graham who predeceased William Senior. This Berryman was born ca 1780 and was married to a Margaret Corum (their son was John, not Herrington). There are deeds in the Caswell County books showing William Graham conveying the land of Berryman Graham deceased, on Hogan's Creek. This Margaret Corum Graham is referred to as Peggy in later guardianship accounts. Therefore, Berryman's wife is not Sarah. I have not come across another son who would be unaccounted for, so I must assume that this Sarah Graham mentioned in the will is an unmarried daughter. In Deed Bk. P page 27 Sarah Graeham of Caswell County sells 63 acres on Hogan's Creek to a Henry Duham - date 25 Sept 1804. This property adjoins Samuel Bracken and William Graham. Family researchers believe William Senior's wife to be Rachel (possibly Rachel Pope). She is mentioned in a deed from Caswell County bk. A page 37 when William Graham sells 215 acres on the norht side of Hogan's Creek to Conrod Strader - date 29 Nov. 1777. I would like to hear from any other family researchers, on their theories regarding Sarah, other children of William Snr. and grandson Herrington.

My John Graham was closely allied to the Alexander Mebane family who also hailed from Chester County, PA and settled into the Hawfields of Orange County, NC. John Graham was first married to Frances Mebane, daughter of Alexander Mebane, Sr. I have always had a curiosity about your set of Grahams [sometimes spelled Grayham] since they were in such proximity to each other. I hope that you will share with the the original settlement of your Grahams. The given names of Elijah, Peter, Johnson, Edward, Jeremiah and Harbert, are unfamiliar to my clan, but we share in the William's, Robert's, John's, and Georges, but add variety with the addition of Thomas and James, which seemed to have entered our line from John Graham's second marriage to Mary Bird. One of the early Graham females did marry a Herndon of Caswell. I will look foward to hearing from you. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

Ronnie Weiss -----Original Message----- From: Gail Loafman [mailto:gloafman@texhoma.net] Sent: Monday, October 07, 2002 3:56 PM To: Ronald Weiss Subject: Re: James Lea-William Burch Ronald, I wonder if you would look in the book "Caswell County North Carolina Deed Books 1777-1817" , Katharine Kerr Kendall, for the two surnames that have "pitched me such a fit!"..... I have the LOAFMAN FAMILY, who married the PERKINS girls around 1810-1815. Edward L. married Sally Perkins Bond dtd 24 July 1810, and Benjamin L. married Nancy, Bond dated 7 Sept 1813. I found where Benjamin became insolvent, and lost goods at a Sheriff's sale, then bought more property before selling out and going to Ky, but I can find nothing on Edward and Sally in the places I have looked up to now. Wondered if you'd check for Perkins listed in deeds, and for Loafmans, if there are deeds. I would be eternally grateful. Gail Loafman researching the broad base of the Loafmans since 1975
