Two Elizabeth Williamses of Madison Co., KY - Were their fathers, Joseph Williams and Daniel Williams, sons of Henry Williams (d. ca 1786) of Caswell Co. NC? Elizabeth Williams of Madison Co., KY married Barnette Eades in Madison Co., KY in 1811. The bride's father was Joseph Williams, who is believed to be the son of Henry Williams, decd, of Caswell Co., NC (d. ca 1786). Another Elizabeth Williams married Leonard Dozier 27 Jun 1817 in Madison Co., KY. That bride's father, who gave consent, was Daniel Williams. Daniel Williams is believed to be the brother of above-named Joseph Williams and thus son of Henry Williams decd of Caswell Co., NC. Is anyone on these lists aware of the relationship of these two Williams fathers of Madison Co., KY. (Joseph Williams is believed to be the one who married Sally Searcy, dau. of Bartlett Searcy and his wife Lucy, formerly of colonial Granville Co., NC.) This is found in Caswell Co. deed book, as compiled by Katherine Kerr Kendall: 1795 - DB L-22-23 Joseph Williams of Madison Co., KY, to Israel Barker of Orange Co., NC, for 20 pds., 100 A on Ridge fork adj Barker. Wit: Nathan Williams, Eli Stacy. (Nathan Williams was another son of Henry Williams, deceased. Nathan went to Tennessee.) E.W.Wallace
Hello, I do have some information on your Henry Williams, which you more than likely have. He was sometimes referred to as Col. Henry Williams in some Caswell records. His daughter Susannah was first married to Christopher Brooks by whom she had one son, Christopher Williams Brooks; she was married second to William Higgason Rice by whom she had six daughters, Rebecca, Mary, Elizabeth, Marcey, and Henrietta. The Thomas Rice who witnessed Col. Henry Williams' will was most likely the father of William Higgason Rice. His son Henry married Mary "Polly" Gooch, daughter of William Gooch and Frances Rice. Mary's sister Sarah "Sally" Gooch, became the second wife of William Higgason Rice, after Susannah Williams Rice died. I believe that Jane "Jenny" Williams married 19 Dec. 1788 to David Gooch, brother to Mary and Sarah. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC Ursula Duke Williams was first married to Reuben Peoples. As I recall, Richard "Ready Money" Oldham married second to Martha "Patsy" Reid. Robert Bowman was a son of Royall Bowman, and Simon Roberts was a son-in-law of Royall Bowman, having married his daughter Nancy Bowman in Charlotte County, VA 3 January 1787. (1787 appears to be the year in which Royall Bowman first acquired land in Caswell County, NC. Previously he had lived in Charlotte County, VA, to which he had moved in 1771 from Prince Edward County, VA. Prior to 1753 records for Royall Bowman and his father Robert Bowman are in Amelia County, VA.) Robert Bowman and Simon Roberts sold a mill located on 25 acres of land along Country Line Creek to Barkley Elam of Mecklenburg County for $1,200 on 7 July 1799 (Caswell County Deed Book C, pages 214-15). A little more than a year later Elam was dead and his executors resold this mill property to John Wilson of Halifax County, VA ! (Caswell County Deed Book C, pages 296-97). Both deeds refer to it as "mill" property. It is not clear when Robert Bowman and Simon Roberts acquired this property, but it may have been taken by them as their share of Royall Bowman's estate when it was settled in 1791.

I saw your post about a person/persons who died in Waco, Texas in the 1910s and 1920s. I know from my own research that many death certificates are NOT held by the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics (or whatever its name is now) in Austin, but Waco is a fair-sized city--and probably was in 1911. The death certificate may be held in the county courthouse, or, in some cases, at City Hall in Waco. I will share my experience: My great-grandfather died in Victoria, TX in 1920, and my cousin and I found his death certificate at City Hall, rather than at the county level. My grandmother, who precedeased her father, had her death certificate at the county level--she had died on a ranch in the county. Death certificates frequently tell the birthplace of the decedent, and sometimes, if you are lucky, they may tell the name of at least one parent. (This is only as accurate as the informant's info, which sometimes is mightily incorrect.) Also, censuses from 1880 (he 1880 census is now online but guess at the spellings, as they frequently are inaccurate, either because of the transcriber's failure or the census-taker's error) usually ask for the birthplace of the parents of each person enumerated. This may tell you about your ancestor's origins. Now, back to Waco--Baylor University there has a large Texana collection, and many genealogists in that area use their facilities. There used to be a card catalog with the family name on it--but by now, this catalog may be online, but perhaps not for you and me. Anyway, use a search engine and look for Baylor University. Then look for a link to libraries and see for yourself whether there is an online catalog. (Betcha there is!) Also, near Waco at Hillsboro, TX, at Hill Junior College (probably called Community College now) there is a Confederate Museum. If you suspect you have any other Texans who go back to the Civil War, you may want to use a search engine to see what may be available. Waco is in McLennan Co., TX, and it is the county seat. Censuses tell us a lot--about a divorced uncle who was revered by his Catholic niece!!! And so on. E.W.Wallace

Hi, I hate to pass up the opportunity to ask about this Sherman line. I have not researched it, so have very little. Do any of you know of a Jack Sherman, who married Hannah Jones? I have penciled in that they married in 1815 in Granville Co. I see that Caswell Co., Granville Co., and Lunenburg Co. are being mentioned, so thought my Jack might be part of the same group. Jack Sherman and his wife had a daughter, Rowan, who married Thomas Blalock. Would appreciate any information you might have. Thanks. Sue
