In this 1810 census of Caswell County, I have 5 columns headed "F - S - L - C - V" to right of the age categories for males and females and have neglected to make a note of the meaning of each. Can someone help interpret the column abbreviations? Many thanks as always. Marilyn F= free persons except Indians not taxed. S= Slaves. Thats as far as I can go from memory. Russ. >>><:>

Hi, Bill, I come from the Andrew Caddel and Jean Henderson lineage, also. Mitchell's were also in Person, Caswell area. Henry Mitchell married Nancy Carnal about 1780. I believe Henry Mitchell may have been a son of Robert Mitchell who married Ann Lea. I am not positive, but I am sure they were related as Henry helped with the selling of Arthur Mitchell's land and Arthur was a son of Robert and Ann. I have been told that Patrick Carnal's wife was Mary Caddel. They lived in Caswell county, NC. This couple is Nancy Carnal's parents. Just thought I would add to the conversation! Linda Franks

Pam, Long time no hear... I have no other TRAYLOR/TAYLOR record. However, I'm intersted in who you have from Spotsylvania et al...re: "I have two sets (possibly more) of families from the Spotsylvania/Orange/Culpeper area of Virginia that moved to two different locations in NC---one set that moved from there to Orange/Caswell, NC,...." I'm finding GREENs, HENDERSONs and other allied families that married LEA...interconnected. I'm closing in on my Andrew CADDEL's roots in VA. He prob was indentured in the Hanover/Spotsylvania area after he came over from Scotland in c1746, witness deed in 1751 Spotsylvania, SCC/surveys in 1754 in Orange Co., NC w/LEA group. He married a Jean Henderson (c1765) and several of his children married GREEN. It's obvious that Andrew CADDEL, his wife Jean HENDERSON and his children was very closely allied with the LEA. Bill and everyone in Caswell, That Joseph TAYLOR listed as a witness to the 1788 LEE-McNEILL Deed of Gift was actually my own Joseph TRAYLOR. (There were no TAYLOR listings in 1784 in Caswell, only my Joseph TRAYLOR---recorded in 1784 as TRAYLOR and in 1790 as Joseph TAYLOR. [Thanks for additional record!]) :-) I have two sets (possibly more) of families from the Spotsylvania/Orange/Culpeper area of Virginia that moved to two different locations in NC---one set that moved from there to Orange/Caswell, NC, and another that moved from there to Surry/Wilkes, NC. Some of the families in each set had intermarried, while others who may or may not have been related at least knew each other, given their proximity to each other in Virginia. ( I also know of at least one man listed in an Orange, VA deed as moving to North Carolina [Charles STEVENS, who died in Caswell. Anyone have records for him in NC?]) I know he died there, but have no details of his will, which probably relate back to VA... The Orange, VA to Orange/Caswell, NC group of my own that I am currently aware of was my Dunkin/ Duncan BOHANNON/BOHANON/BOHANIN (III), whose apparent 2nd wife was Susanna MAY, who seems to have been a dau. of John MAY of Caroline Co., VA. (Duncan's first wife apprears to have been a BAYLOR, dau. of John II.) This family was also recorded as: BUCHANON, BUCKHANNON, BUCHANNON. My Joseph Traylor's surname switched back and forth between TRAYLOR and TAYLOR in all of the records I have of him during his lifetime (his estate, recorded in Brunswick Co., VA, 1794 is TRAYLOR in the probate records---listed as TAYLOR in Virginia Wills and Administrations.) Joseph was first recorded in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1772; he had at least 6 children, but died, place unknown, in 1794. I know that he was in Caswell 1784-1790, and that he died in 1794. But I do NOT know exactly where he died---it does not appear to have been in either Brunswick, VA or in Caswell or Person County, NC. Any help ANY person may give will be greatly appeciated. Thanks, everyone! Books by Dr. John Hope Franklin will probably give you as much history of this period as you can absorb. I do not have the names but know that Dr. Franklin has been the preeminent authority of the free black experience in this country for many, many years. Another scholar who is recognized as probably the next best authority after Dr. Franklin is Dr. Ira Berlin who (I believe) is a professor at the University of Maryland. There is also a professor of history at NC Central University in Durham, NC who has written a book about free black families in Caswell and surrounding counties. I have read some of Dr. Franklin's writings and heard the other 2 scholars speak at a Thomas Day Education Project symposium in the Historic Caswell County Courthouse 2 years ago. Thomas Day was born in Dinwiddie County, VA and his family was a part of this migration. A CD-Rom will soon be available (any day now) that uses his life to teach research skills. As soon as I have an opportunity, I'll post some additional info about these folks and the CD-ROM which may be helpful. Lib McPherson, President Caswell County Historical Assn. Hello Rice Researchers, I an sending along copies of two postings from other sites which gave me pause for thought, since the Kerr name is found as a given name in my family of Rices from Thomas (CB) Rice of Hanover Co. VA and Caswell Co. NC. I am interested in knowing if any of you have run across similar early Rice/Kerr connections in your research. We still do not know the maiden or given names of Thomas' wife and mother. My strong feelings are that Thomas was a descendant of John Rice, so the first posting caught my attention. The second posting caught my attention because Thomas Rice of Caswell had a daughter named Lucy. If anyone knows of how these Rices mentioned below would fit into the Rice genealogy, that would also be a plus. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC POSTING ONE: James Kerr of Albemarle, VA ca 1770-1798 Posted by: Martha Irwin Date: May 23, 2001 at 07:42:24 of 3307 Go Seeking information for a James Kerr b. ca 1740 and married 1: Sarah Unknown who died before 1795 in Albemarle, VA. I have the following reference (below) to McNeill/McNeal and others noted in my database. The Andrew CADDEL is my gggg grandfather (Immigrant from Scotland). The Jean CADDEL is the spouse of Andrew, her maiden name was HENDERSON. Andrew was allied to the LEA family before 1754, to what extent I do not know. Andrew witnessed a deed in Spotsylvania Co., VA in 1751. The other note, Re: Vermillion per will. HI: I'm researching my LONG/TONEY/WALKER families in Caswell County. Have discovered that they were probably free mixed-race African Americans who may have migrated from Virginia in the 1700s. I would like to know how to go about finding out more about this migration. Have found ARTHUR TONEY and WILLIAM LONG (William Long married NANCY TONEY, possibly ARTHUR's granddaughter, in 1840 in Caswell Co.) on the freeafricanamericans.com site in the 1810 Census. All reference works/titles/bibligraphy suggestions appreciated. KBerry
