All 10 Regiments sent north by the state were consolidated in 1778 into 2 battaloions: 1st NC Battalion-Col Thomas Clark Lt. Col Mebane Cpt Howell Tatum Cpt John Summers Cpt James Read Cpt Tillman Dixon These total five companies 2nd Battalion-Col. John Patton Col. John Patton Maj. Hardy Murfree Lt. Col. Harney Cpt. Robert Fenner Cpt John Ingles Cpt. Clement Hall Cpt. Benjamin Coleman Cpt. Thomas Armstrong These total eight companies. So the original companies were reorganized into these 2 battalions, but it looks like Dixon's company stayed in the 1st battalion.

I hope that someone is posting all of this wonderful information that Ronald is typing up on Caswell marriages on the Caswell Co. Gen Web page!! It would be terrible not to! You never know when a search will be just what someone else is looking for and help them locate a missing record. Please pass information you type up to either the GenWeb page or RootsWeb or for that matter, BOTH!!

Several weeks ago I made a trip to the office of the Register of Deeds in Caswell county. I had just been there about 3 weeks before this visit and had a great time looking at the marriage records and getting information on the Foster's from this county. On this visit as I was getting ready to start pulling the marriage records, I was informed that no one can pull records anymore. They had found that one of the records was missing and the Register of Deeds had decided that that only way you can see a record of any type is to have one of her employees pull the record, xerox it for a charge of 1 dollar and then and only then could you see it. This charge is for each and every record you want to see, whether you need a copy or not. In my case I have a Foster gg-grandfather that I know is from Caswell, but I have not been able to connect him to any of the Fosters there. I am doing a spreadsheet with all the Fosters in Caswell, Alamance and Guilford counties with birth, marriage and death dates for each one. It is impossible to pay 1.00 each for each record to do this. Some of this is available at the Archives in Raleigh but is not nearly as convenient. This is just to let you out of town or state people know that until she changes her mind... be sure to take plenty of money with you when you go to Caswell County. Please check the Caswell marriages for the marriage of William Flintoff to Isabella Evans. They are of African and/or Native American ancestry and may be identified as "Mulatto." Thanks, Jalil
Caswell County had a fairly large population of free people of color in the 19th century. You should read Dr. John Hope Franklin's book on free people of color (Can't remember the exact title, but it's the definitive book on this subject.) Also, a professor of history at NC Central University has a book specific to this part of North Carolina that you should know about. I heard the NCCU professor speak at the Thomas Day Education Project Symposium in the Historic Caswell County Courthouse in October 2000 - a excellent presentation. Don't remember his name or the book title, but may have it somewhere in a file. HI: I've received several responses about my inquiry into African American Longs and Toneys in Caswell Co. Have verified the marriage of William Long and Nancy Toney. See how you assume things. It looks as if William and Nancy, or rather Nancy and her parents, were free people of color. I was assuming that all my ancestors were slaves! Now I will try to trace the history of the county -- were blacks required to leave the state if they were freedmen? My family did not leave, although William and Nancy's son Nathaniel and his wife moved to Alamance Co. (Maybe they even got married there -- I haven't been able to find this out.) Thanks again, fellow researchers! KBerry
