    3. [Hopefully this is not a duplicate posting -- My ISP seems to be extremely slow, to not-at-all, lately at sending these emails off] I'm related to John Smith and his son Samuel Smith, both of Rockingham County NC. They also have ties to Caswell County. I have a number of connections to the Williamsons there as well as the Russells, Swifts etc. In order to keep it short, I'll just quote this one section and one Williamson so that I can see if any of you are interested in a more complete listing of Russells, Swifts etc. 1) "Genealogy of the Smith Family of Rockingham County North Carolina" Smith, J. Fletcher [Smith] III. Samuel (3), (Samuel (2), John (1)). Born 1790, in Rockingham Co., N.C Married Elizabeth Williamson of Caswell Co., N.C. in 1812. She was his second cousin. She died in 1815. . . . The main question about this quote, who made Samuel Smith Jr. the 2nd cousin of Elizabeth Williamson? I have her listed as dau of Sarah Swift (1763- ) and Nathan Williamson (1750- ). I would appreciate your comments and help, K. McGee

    1. North Carollina Deeds
    2. Bill Caddell
    3. To all you Researchers/Super Sluttish, I have a procedural question: Was it common for minors to be deeded land? What about listed in tax records? Here's the situation (Person Co., NC): 1792 deed of gifts from Andrew CADDEL (the immigrant) to his three sons (identified John as oldest, then Andrew and William the youngest) i.e., listed "John, Andrew, Martha, Jane, Unisa, & William Caddel". From census records (1850, 1860) John was listed as being 75, 73 respectively. That means that in 1792 John would have been either 17 or 19 years of age and Andrew and William would probably both be minors. There was three daughters between John and William. Making William (in 1792) possibly as young as four years old. In 1785 (Caswell Co., NC, became Person County in 1791), Andrew, the father deeded gifts of land to sons John and Andrew. William was not mentioned in any deed until 1792 (noted above). I assume William was not yet born in 1785. Knowing John's age to be (in 1785) either 12 or 10. And, Andrew was probably abt eight years old (estimated born 1777). Next I have an instrument, dated 1792, which deeded land from a Henry Wilson to William CADDEL(estimated to be abt four years old). It was witnessed by Lewis Green (Jurat), Andrew Caddel, John Caddel. Lewis Green was an uncle to William (married a sister older than John). I assume that this Andrew was the father (since he was listed before John as a witness). And, John (William's eldest brother) was probably 17 years old. 1790 William CADDEL was listed in tax list St Lukes District, Caswell Co., NC. According to records, William would probably be abt two years old. I assume that Andrew, the father was paying the taxes. 1800 census of Person Co., NC, Andrew CADDEL household included a male born abt 1790, thought to be William. 1810 census of Pendleton Dist., SC, Andrew CADDEL household included a male born abt 1785-1794, thought to be William. 1820 William was first listed as head of household in St Clair Co., AL census. A 1830 census of A 1830 census of McNairy Co., TN listed William as abt born abt 1790. No other age records have been found for William. He died during the 1830s. The records seem plain enough, but I don't understand the handling of minor chilldren in deeds. There were no other families to be confused with the Andrew CADDEL household. It consisted of Andrew, the father and sons John, Andrew and William. Any comments appreciated. Bill Caddell gggg grandson of Andrew CADDEL, the immigrant

He was a black slave in Caswell County, more specifically in Blanch NC. I believe the plantation he worked on was called either Sunrise Plantation or Sunny Home Plantation. I was told he bought his freedom in 1859. His slavemasters were of the Wilson family of Scottish descent who settle in the VA/NC area. He was a Reverend and he started several black churches in NC including Ebenezer Baptist in Providence NC. He was married to a Patsey Staples and they had Archibald, Rueben Jr., George (my grandfather), Hattie, Anna Bell, Thomas, and several other children. I believe he had 10 children in all, most of whom migrated to the north. Also if anyone has has any information on the Holloway family in the same Blanch area please contact me.

    3. Try www.abebooks.com. It's an invaluable internet service that connects used book dealers with buyers. The website search engine will allow you to browse the listings of hundreds of dealers by author, title, subject, keywords, etc., and provides complete contact/purchase information if your book turns up. The listings are updated continually by the dealers, so don't give up after one search. Check back from time to time. That's how I finally obtained my copy of Dr. Powell's "When the Past Refused to Die." I have an ancestral uncle, William Draper, son of Solomon and Elizabeth Draper of Virginia and Person/Caswell County, NC. William Draper's wife was named Frances (last name unknown) but among his children named in his will was a John Harrison Draper. I have suspected that Elizabeth Draper, wife of Solomon, may have also been a Harrison, perhaps of Westmoreland County, Va. Solomon and Elizabeth Draper's daughter, Frances, was my ancestress who was the wife of Henry Royster of Mecklenburg and Henry Counties, Va. and Person County, NC. Among their children was my ancestor, William Harrison Royster. His son, Solomon Royster, married Sarah Jay Satterfield of Caswell. Sarah Jay was a daughter of Samuel Satterfield and his wife, Joanna Drake. The Samuel Pittard who witnessed the will of Thomas Harrison, was married to Joanna Drake's sister Rebecca Drake. I think that you can understand my interest in Thomas Harrison's will. If the Harrison family is one which you have researched, I would greatly appreciate any information which you may be able to provide. I know from lots of experiece in researching families that the same families often intermarried with each other over several generations. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC
