Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVB.2ACI/969.1 Message Board Post: The Straits, which is the narrow channel between Harkers Island in Core Sound and the mainland, gets its name from the word “Strait,” meaning a narrow strip of water separating two seas. The Straits census district typically has stretched from about Jarrots Bay to North River. For example, the 1800 Census included four “districts” along Core Sound that referred to The Straits: “Straights between Jarrots Bay and Daw’s Creek.” “Straights, between Daws Creek and Chadwick's Creek.” “Straights, between Chadwicks Creek and North River.” “North River, east side, between the Straight and Tanner’s Creek.”
