Jackson, who crashed his patrol car into a tree near Newport while chasing a speeding car. His death is listed in Albert Coates? ?A History of the North Carolina Highway Patrol,? Chapel Hill, NC, 1983, and in Fred B. Davis, ?From Whence We Came: A Brief History of the North Carolina State Patrol,? Raleigh, NC, 1990, but neither give the date. Jackson was the 10th state trooper to die in the line of duty since the formation of the patrol in Carteret County in 1929. He was the first in Carteret County. The second and last one to die in Carteret County was William J. Smith, my brother-in-law, who died on January 12, 1974, on NC 101 near Harlowe when he hit a bridge abutment while during a high speed chase.
