Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVB.2ACI/960.1 Message Board Post: You are probably referring to the 1949 death of NS State Highway Patrolman R. W. Jackson, who crashed his patrol car into a tree near Newport while chasing a speeding car. His death is listed in Albert Coates? ?A History of the North Carolina Highway Patrol,? Chapel Hill, NC, 1983, and in Fred B. Davis, ?From Whence We Came: A Brief History of the North Carolina State Patrol,? Raleigh, NC, 1990, but neither give the date. Jackson was the 10th state trooper to die in the line of duty since the formation of the patrol in Carteret County in 1929. He was the first in Carteret County. The second and last one to die in Carteret County was William J. Smith, my brother-in-law, who died on January 12, 1974, on NC 101 near Harlowe when he hit a bridge abutment while during a high speed chase. An article I wrote, ?The North Carolina State Highway Patrol: The Carteret County Connection? covers the beginnings of the patrol at Camp Glenn, near Morehead City (The Researcher, Carteret ! County Historical Society, Vol. X, No. III, 1994).

I can't find anything before William Caleb. Just some big guesses. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. I am also working on Berry, Pegram, Hodges, Williams, Lewis', Spencer and Sadler from Hyde Co., would be willing to share information if looking for one of those surnames. My grandmother grew up on Chatham St. in Newport and remembers an accident that happened in front of her house when she was a little girl. She knows that her brother had been born and was a baby. This narrows the 10 years down to 1943-1947. She can't remember exactly what year or time of year. She does remember that it involved a policeman in a high speed chase. She also knows that the policeman was killed in the accident. This is the only information she could give me. If anyone can help me research this or at least point me in the right direction, that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

Mary (Polly) Styron, the deceased wife of George W. Stryron, was one of the heirs. The children are named in the document Josephus, [Christopher] Weatherly, Ann Marie, Mary F. G and Caroline. They received lot number 6 from the division. They also received a share in the outlands belonging to Col Elijah Pigott. From your information it does not appear that Mary (polly) Pigott is the mother of GW Jr, William, Benjamin, Cicero, Ann or Theodore. giles willis

Susan Bennett was married to both of these men. Susan met George Jr. on a train. She had no idea who he was at the time. I heard this story myself from one of George Jr's grandaughters who was my fathers sister. Here are the names I have for the children of Mary Polly Pigott and George Styron. Anna Marie Styron Mary F. Styron Charlotte C. Styron Ann Styron Christopher W. Styron Josephus Styron George Washington Styron Jr. William Styron Benjamin F. Styron Cicero B. Styron Theodore P. Styron Not sure but it could be the same family. Names are very close. I also know that George Jr. was born in 1844. Susan wasn't born until 1849 tho. Was your Poly F. ever listed as Mary Polly? Carteret Co. had a lot of George Styron's (Stiron's) (Styring's) during that time. Many were different clan's. Have had a hard time getting documents on this side of the family. Do you have anymore info on your Poly Pigott? Thanks for writing. Sincerely Kimberly

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVB.2ACI/959.1 Message Board Post: Dear Susan, I was interested in your query because of the connection that George W. Styron had with the Pigott family. George W. Styron married Poly F(Fulford) Pigott, daughter of Col Elijah Pigott. When Elijah died, polly was already dead and her children by George W. Styron were listed as "infants" in his will, dated 1844. Children were Josephus, Weatherly, Ann Maria, Mary, Caroline. None of these children appear to be George W. Styron, Jr. Would this be the same family and would you have additional information on this family? Researching this family is difficult because most of the heirs of Col Elijah Pigott sold their land and moved away from Carteret County.
