He does not show up in the 1810-1850 censuses nor the cemetery records of Carteret County. Perhaps he moved to Onslow County.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVB.2ACI/969.1 Message Board Post: The Straits, which is the narrow channel between Harkers Island in Core Sound and the mainland, gets its name from the word “Strait,” meaning a narrow strip of water separating two seas. The Straits census district typically has stretched from about Jarrots Bay to North River. For example, the 1800 Census included four “districts” along Core Sound that referred to The Straits: “Straights between Jarrots Bay and Daw’s Creek.” “Straights, between Daws Creek and Chadwick's Creek.” “Straights, between Chadwicks Creek and North River.” “North River, east side, between the Straight and Tanner’s Creek.”

I am getting at a question concerning the Straits. Prior to 1800 (in the eighteenth century), could the Straits, in Carteret County, have been a name designating a broader area along Core Sound than the location that is known by that name today? Could those strips of land, Hog Island and Cedar Island also be included as the Straits? Does anyone have information on this? What is known about the early origins of the name, the Straits? Any information about this would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Looking for information on the Sawyer family
    2. GenealogyGirl
    3. Hi there! I'm new to this list. I'm looking into trying to find out information on: Lula Jane Sawyer, born March 12, 1899, North Carolina...I think Fairfield NC. I don't have much information on her and I don't have her parent's information. I know she married Mr. Simmons (I don't have his first name) and had two children by him: Ruby Simmons, and Fonzo Simmons. Later she remarried to Lafayette Gillikin, and had 3 daughters by him: Virginia Dare Gillikin, Dorothy Grace Gillikin and Eurcel Grace Gillikin between 1928-1935. Lafayette was from the Otway NC area. Does Lula Jane Sawyer ring a bell with any Sawyer family researchers? Rebecca Toronto, Canada

I collect everything that has the name Gillikin in it and I do not have anyone by those names. Could they be middle names. I myself go by my middle name and it is real confusing at times. The only Wetherington I have in my data base is Grace May Noe, daughter of West Noe and Emma Lee Dickinson married 25 Dec 1934 to Charles Street Wetherington. If you can add any more information, like Julian and Effie's married name or any dates, I may be able to come up with someting.
