The item you refer to is in Nell Nugent's book , Cavaliers and Pioneers. James Vanerit bought 1000 acres from a person named Stafferton who obtained the 1000 acres because he [Stafferton] arranged for passage of 20 people to the colony of Virginia including William Richard Whitehurst. The date of 1636 when Vanerit bought the property would indicate that these people came to Virginia some time prior to 1636. Vanerit did not bring Richard Whitehurst to Virginia. In 1648, Richard Whitehurst arranged for passage of 5 persons for which he [Richard] was awarded a land grant. Reference "Richard Whitehurst Grandfather of us all" by Becky Sandeers, 1978

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVB.2ACI/1043.2 Message Board Post: My guess is that James Clifford Lawrence was the son of James Lawrence and Margarete Ann Guthrie of Straits. He married first Rachel Nelson in 1901, who died between 1912 and 1920, then married Minnie Willis about 1921-22. There daughter Marguerite was likely named for his mother. His only son by his first wife, William, was living with and Minnie in 1930. I don’t know where his daughters by Rachel were. Minnie appears to be buried in Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City, but not James. Here’s the data from which I drew this conclusion. Mary was born in Cork, Ireland and moved to Beaufort from Boston after the Civil War. He opened Clawson's Grocery and Bakery in the 1880s. His son, Charles Jr. took over the business and built the building that still stands on Front Street in 1909. It has been the home of the popular Clawson's Restaurant for some years (although it is no longer owned by the Clawson family. Charles Sr. died in 1908. There is a history of the family in the Heritage of Carteret County, Vol. II, #147, pp. 34-36. There is also an article in the Winter 1998 issue of The Researcher (Vol. XIV, No. 2, pp. 4-7) about the Clawson's Grocery and Bakery by the late Frank Clawson, son of Charles Jr. It also gives some family history. The Carteret County Historical Society (historyplace@starfishnet.com) should be able to supply you with copies of these. Also, I believe that one of the Clawsons is a member of the Society and may be able to provide you with information. Cindi Hamilton of CCHS should be able to put you in contact with him. If you have problems, please contact me.
