I have checked the census data of James and Mary Alexander's children for mother's place of birth and while that is not reliable, in all cases except for one child in 1900 who listed MD, the mother's place of birth was VA. I don't know where I picked up the information that Mary Payne was born in Rowan County NC, but now I doubt that is accurate.
