    3. LTC (Ret.) Sion H. Harrington III, Military Collections Archivist for the State Archives of North Carolina, is recruiting volunteers for an ambitious project to recognize every North Carolinian who served in World War I. Si's message follows below. ----------------------- Those who served in World War I have been largely overlooked, overshadowed by World War II and subsequent military actions. Our World War I veterans deserve better, which is why are going to do our best to insure that every North Carolina man and woman who served is included in a searchable, on-line Roster of Tar Heels in The Great War. Another goal of the project is to collect original papers, such as letters, postcards, and diaries, as well as official government documents, such as sets of orders, discharges, certificates, citations, and the like for preservation in the Military Collection. Photographs of Tar Heels in uniform are also very much needed. These may be either donated originals, copy prints, or scanned images. We must have help. The critical element of success for this project will be the contributions of our volunteers. We need to build a statewide network of volunteers to serve as points of contact to publicize the project within their respective counties and encourage the sharing of appropriate materials. The volunteers will be both in the forefront of the collection and preservation effort, as well as helping to insure that no Tar Heel's service is overlooked. Won't you join us as we seek to recognize the sons and daughters of North Carolina who defended democracy in what many thought would be "the war to end all wars?" Please contact me to contribute artifacts and to volunteer in this important endeavor. LTC (Ret.) Sion H.
