Hi, I have seen the surname mentioned in Spartanburg Co., SC as Townsell. In 1880 Burke County, NC Census, Icard Twp. cited are: 106/113 Townsell, Pinckney, WF 21, Works on farm NC NC NC (he appears in 1900 BC Census as Pinkney Townsand with a flock of kids Emily K. WF 21, wife NC NC NC 235/241 Townsel, P. C. WM 23, Farmer NC NC NC (he appears in 1900 BC Census as Tounsan, Pollie C.) Charity, WF 20, wife NC NC NC 241/247 Townsel, Lucinda WF 64, widow, KH, NC NC NC (must have died) Elvira, WF 24, dau. NC NC NC (unproven, m. Pinkney M. Propst!) Frankling, WM 26, son, works on farm, NC NC NC Jane, WF 17, dau, NC NC NC (by 1900 Jane is m. to Adolphus Cline (which Adolphus Cline, b. Mar 1865 is he?) with brother, Franklin Townsend, living there as well as Docter Propst (servant), age 7 (he might be the son of Pinkney M. Propst b. 21 June 1891 BC NC known as Dock D. Propst) Do any of the above appear familiar to anyone? This bunch are all apparently still in Icard Twp., Burke Co., NC in 1900 (except Pinkney, Elvira and two other kids, William & Lela G.) I need help to straighten these families out - Cline, Townsend, Propst of whatever spelling of surname. George B. Cline, Jr.'s book The Cline Families of NC 1750-1860. of 2003 hasn't helped yet.
