Poll tax is a tax per head effective in North Carolina since before 1777 up until 1970. The age range for those liable to pay poll tax changed over the years, but in 1835 the law permanently established taxable ages as follows: "All free males over the age of twenty-one years, and under the age of forty-five years, and all slaves over the age of twelve years, and under the age of fifty years . . ."
