I have located the following record for a Rachel Mull who died in Burke County 02 July 1926. Rachel MULL died 02 July 1926 in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Source: Rachel Mull entry, Burke County Deaths, Volume 14, page 37, Register of Deeds Office, Morganton, North Carolina. Age at time of death: 66 (somewhat illegible) Marital status at death: widowed Cause of death: dysentery Birthplace of deceased: Burke County Birthplace of parents of deceased: Burke County Father's name: Pruett Mother's name: [not stated] Date and place of burial: 03 July 1926 in Lower Fork Township, Burke County I am trying to determine if this record is for the same Rachel MULL who was married briefly to Henry MULL. The marriage record for Henry and Rachel includes the following information: Rachel Lail, 40, of Burke Co., NC, married Henry Mull, 57, of Burke Co., NC on 30 March 1899 in Morganton, Burke Co., NC Parents of Rachel Lail: John and Bettie Lail (father dead, mother living) Parents of Henry Rull: Billie and Nancy Mull (father dead, mother living) License issued to A. Carswell on 29 March 1899 Witnesses to the marriage: S. S. Lance, J. M. McGalliard, and Samuel Hern, all of Morganton, North Carolina Officiating officer: D. C. Pearson, J.P. Place of marriage: Burke County Jail Source: Burke County Marriage Book 5: 406, Register of Deeds Office, Morganton, North Carolina Note that the Rachel on the marriage record lists her maiden name as LAIL. The maiden name for the Rachel Mull on the death record above is PRUETT. I am not convinced that the name Pruett is correct. I do not know who supplied the family information at the time of Rachel's death but it could have been someone who had no idea who her parents were. I was unable to find any other Rachel Mull who might have been living in Burke County at the same time as Rachel Lail MULL. I also was unable to locate a Rachel PRUETT who might have been born in North Carolina about 1860. Does anyone have additional information about the MULL or PRUETT families that might help me determine if the Rachel MULL on the above death record was in fact the Rachel LAIL who married Henry MULL? Also, I was curious about the marriage taking place at the county jail. Was this unusual? Does this mean that one of the two parties was incarcerated or was it just a convenient place to marry because the J.P. was in the building? Thank you for your help. Teri
