    1. [NCBurke] William Morrel and Nancy Montgomery of Burke County
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MORREL, MORRELL, MONTGOMERY, CARLISLE, CAMPBELL, KIRKPATRICK Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5UB.2ACI/2677 Message Board Post: I am looking for Amherst County, Virginia records for William Morrel (wife Nancy Montgomery) who on 10 March 1778 received a certificate for 100 acres in Burke County, North Carolina on the south side of the Catawba River. This land is located across the river from John Montgomery who is almost certainly the father of Nancy Montgomery. This William Morrel moved to the Pendleton District of South Carolina in 1789 and later to Jackson County, Tennessee. The Morrel and Montgomery families are said to have come to North Carolina from Amherst County, Virginia. I have been told that there are deeds there for William Morrel. Specifically one deed is reported to be between Moses Hughes and William Morrell. I do not know who is grantee. In the other document, William Morrell of Burke Co., NC gives Robert Wright power of attorney to sell 29 acres of land in Amherst. I am told that one of these deeds can be found in Deed Book E, p. 52-63 and the other, possibly, in Deed Book E, p. 90. Unfortunately the clerk of Amherst County does not have the resources to find and copy this material. If there are Burke County researchers who already have access to these deeds, I would very much appreciate assistance in obtaining the documents or at least a good abstract of them. I would also like to hear from other researchers with information on these families. Does anyone know of a bond or other record of the marriage of William Morrel to Nancy Montgomery? Their marriage and the names of their children are found in a Montgomery deposition taken in the mid-nineteenth century but I have not found earlier records except for the Burke County, NC and the Pendleton District, SC deeds.
