How does the move from Rootsweb/TGN affect North Carolina county mailing lists? Do those remain on Rootsweb/TGN? What happens to the archives of the Rootsweb/TGN North Carolina mailing lists? Do those remain on the Rootsweb/TGN server?

    1. [NCBURKE] NCGenWeb page changes
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Folks, Behind the scenes, members of the USGenWeb Project on every level, state, county and local, have been involved in a massive project. While my work and that of other County Coordinators has been virtually transparent, it has involved a great deal of effort you may not have noticed. This has been necessitated due to a corporate policy change by The Genealogy Network, owner of RootsWeb. They have freely housed our sites for a dozen years and have been responsible for the rapid growth of the genealogical pursuits we all enjoy. The acquisition of RootsWeb by The Genealogy Network, corporate owner of Ancestry.com and others genealogical entities, is a step designed to reflect their responsibility to their stockholders. Obviously, RootsWeb provides no tangible profit to their bottom line. Their decision to make RootsWeb a closer affiliate of their genealogical family was a logical corporate decision. You may also note that the Rootsweb URL you are accustomed to seeing now has the Ancestry.com name consolidated within it. The implications go beyond just an address change and the addition of an Ancestry.com banner at the top of each page hosted by RootsWeb. The changes recently made by the USGenWeb Project to seek other hosting arrangements were necessitated by the need affect independent control of the USGenWeb Project. To assuage the concerns of each individual state and local Project member and to ensure the concept of free genealogy, this major hosting change was made in accordance with the USGenWeb Project bylaws, as stated in Article II (http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/bylaws.shtml). This could only be accomplished by separating ourselves from our commercial benefactor and making provisions for independent control. This is not to say that any RootsWeb pages were under any direct threat of being compromised or taken over by a commercial entity. The opportunities that TGN has provided during the last decade for free server space has been a boon to all of us and their sponsorship has been appreciated by all page hosts and users. Ultimately, the USGenWeb Project will continue to act in behalf of all those who have come to rely on this organization for the ultimate source of free genealogical resources. - The USGenWeb Project home page can now be found at: http://www.usgenweb.org/ - The NCGenWeb Project, following the lead of our national organization, can now be found at: http://www.ncgenweb.us/ - Along with that move, the USGenWeb Archives are now housed at: http://www.usgwarchives.org/ - The NCGenWeb Archives can be found at: http://usgwarchives.org/nc/ncfiles.htm The pages that I maintain have also been moved as follows: - Catawba has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.us/catawba/ - Burke has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.usncburke/ - Lincoln has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.us/clincoln/ - Gaston has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.us/gaston/ - Cleveland has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.us/cleveland/ - City of Conover has moved to http://www.ncgenweb.us/conover/ Please change your bookmarks accordingly. Individual links will continue to bear the same page address (i.e. xxx.htm). I voluntarily maintain over 10,000 genealogical web pages. The majority of these have required revisions to reflect the new servers. I have also added corrections, additions and scripts to make them as helpful as possible. I solicit the help of all page users in reporting bad links, missing images and non-functioning applications. Nothing is too insignificant. At the same time, I am anxious to receive any new resources that users might be willing to share. Any and all suggestions are also solicited. Thanks also to those who have come to rely on the USGenWeb Project for their "one-stop" genealogical experience. Derick S. Hartshorn Proud member of the USGenWeb Project

    3. I believe that David Julian (or perhaps spelled JULIEN, JULEN, JULIN) was in 1840 Burke Co. NC. However, I can't seem to link up to any of the Burke sites where I could find the 1840 census. Does anyone have access to this census and could do a lookup for me? If there are other Julians in that area, I would also like to know about them. Perhaps David is living near a relative. 1. [NCBURKE] World War I roster Project, North Carolina State Archives
    2. Kathy Gunter Sullivan
    3. LTC (Ret.) Sion H. Harrington III, Military Collections Archivist for the State Archives of North Carolina, is recruiting volunteers for an ambitious project to recognize every North Carolinian who served in World War I. Si's message follows below. ----------------------- Those who served in World War I have been largely overlooked, overshadowed by World War II and subsequent military actions. Our World War I veterans deserve better, which is why are going to do our best to insure that every North Carolina man and woman who served is included in a searchable, on-line Roster of Tar Heels in The Great War. Another goal of the project is to collect original papers, such as letters, postcards, and diaries, as well as official government documents, such as sets of orders, discharges, certificates, citations, and the like for preservation in the Military Collection. Photographs of Tar Heels in uniform are also very much needed. These may be either donated originals, copy prints, or scanned images. We must have help. The critical element of success for this project will be the contributions of our volunteers. We need to build a statewide network of volunteers to serve as points of contact to publicize the project within their respective counties and encourage the sharing of appropriate materials. The volunteers will be both in the forefront of the collection and preservation effort, as well as helping to insure that no Tar Heel's service is overlooked. Won't you join us as we seek to recognize the sons and daughters of North Carolina who defended democracy in what many thought would be "the war to end all wars?" Please contact me to contribute artifacts and to volunteer in this important endeavor. LTC (Ret.) Sion H. 1. [NCBURKE] KELLER Book
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Dear friends, As a full-time volunteer historian and genealogist, I constantly seek out resources to assist fellow genealogists and those seeking family information. Until recently, I have hit a brick wall in locating and identifying the descendants of Anthony Keller who arrived in America in 1740. His descendants settled in Burke (Caldwell) County and throughout the Catawba Valley. LCDR Darrell L. Keller, Jr. has published an extremely attractive and informative book on the KELLER family. I should say "books" as the 751 pages required three volumes to cover the 12 generations which are well documented. Profusely illustrated with color pictures and maps, this study will satisfy the needs of those who have sought information on the Keller family and their collateral families. For more information, please visit the web page that provides more complete details. It is: http://www.hartshorn.us/Kellerbook.htm Derick S. 1. [NCBURKE] WPA cemetery surveys added to Cleveland cemetery page
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. Folks, After a great deal of work on behalf of Ann Propst and myself, the Cleveland County WPA cemetery survey has been posted on the Cleveland County Cemetery page: http://www.ncgenweb.us/cleveland/cemeteries.htm (click on Cleveland County Cemeteries-Master Index) This represents over 500 entries that were only previously available on a CD (http://www.hartshorn.us/CWPA.htm). Also included is a consolidation of contemporary cemetery surveys. This was done so that a search engine (provided by FreeFind) could be used for all published cemetery listings of Cleveland County. Over the years, many old burial grounds have fallen into an unkept condition or outright abandonment. To say that these are threatened is an understatement. In many cases, the WPA surveys were the last accounts made of these cemeteries This cemetery listing has been an attempt to consolidate the surveys taken by the WPA during the period of 1938-1940 together with the cemeteries that have been gratefully contributed to the Cleveland County Archives by many thoughtful folks, not the least of these being Mr. W.D. "Bill" Floyd (http://www.ncgenweb.us/cleveland/WDFloyd.htm). What may appear as duplicate entries are surveys that represent a snapshot in time. The earlier (WPA) surveys, when compared with the later surveys (1997-2003) will demonstrate the deterioration and loss of stones that no longer appear on the later listings. For this reason, later generations can appreciate the efforts done to provide information that might have been forever lost. In addition to the verbatim transcription of the WPA records, Ann Propst, transcriber, has added notes of correction and observation available no where else on the web. The entire listing of cemeteries and related historical information is still available on CD (http://www.hartshorn.us/CWPA.htm). In addition to the recorded burials made by WPA workers, there is an amazing amount of history provided by Cleveland County historians of 70 years ago. The user is encouraged to browse these historic sites for information that would not otherwise be available in a cemetery survey. PLEASE NOTE: If you have book-marked the Cleveland County NCGenWeb Project page, please be aware that all Cleveland County pages have been moved to a new server. 1. [NCBURKE] New Book: The Keller Family - The Descendants of Anthony Keller, 1710 - 1783
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DarrellKeller Surnames: Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.burke/4724/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have finally completed work on The Keller Family - The Descendants of Anthony Keller, 1710 - 1783. This enormous work traces Anthony Keller from Lettweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate (Pfalz), Germany in 1710 through his journey across the ocean in 1740 onboard LOYAL JUDITH to his settlement in York, Pennsylvania. The genealogy portion traces his descendants through his eight children, most of whom migrated out of Pennsylvania down to North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Tennessee. This book is split into two volumes, each about 400 pages, and is thermally bound with nice white paperback cardstock. There are also many pictures, so it is printed in full color. I publish on demand, so the books can be personalized in some small way if you are related to someone in it (by adding missed family names in your branch of the family tree, as well as adding pictures). In this book, you will find a little history of Germany in the 17th and 18th Centuries, a few pages on the Great Wagon Road, and a short history of a few Civil War regiments, such as the 11th NC Regiment, the 26th NC Regiment, and the 50th Indiana Infantry Regiment, and the Kellers who served in those units. Also, you will find the arguments that connect Andrew Keller (who married Rachel Seabolt), Daniel Keller (who married Hannah Payne), and Christian Keller (who married Mary (Molly/Polly) Heifner) to Johann Jacob Keller (son of Johan Peter Keller, son of Anthony Keller). For more information, please visit my website at: www.geocities.com/dlkeller999@sbcglobal.net/index.html or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kellergenealogy/ LCDR Darrell L.
