I am the author of German Speaking People West Of The Catawba River in NC 1750-1800 (1994). I am also descended from Casper Shell, Jr. brother of your Johannes and Catherine Fiegley Shell. Some years back a Jim Martin sent me a note that said Isaac, father of Hannah and Rachel, died in Patrick Co., VA. I have no other details, not even a date. I do have another unsolved mystery about an Issac Martin.He signed the deed as an heir of Johannes in 1805. Could that have been an Issac, Jr. The only way he could have done that (that I can figure)is to have married a Shell daughter. There is an extensive Shell sketch in the above named book which is located in most large Genealogical Libraries across US. There might be one near you. (2) A Winkler who lived only a short time. She then m(3) George Miller, Jr.. the youngest son's father-in-law and died in Carter Co., TN. Johannes (John) was a RW veteran. There was a pension filed in 1857 that contains a copy of Army Certificate #5054 issued by the auditors of Morgan Dist. Court and a certified copy of his will. Many of the Cherokee were as much white as Cherokee, many having European surnames, and many did not leave during the Removal of 1818, making it impossible to locate them in any of the Indian rolls. It is possible to "lose" an ancestor because of this and the fact that Native Americans were not counted in the Census at that time. MARTIN, son of James and Tabitha MARTIN because I cannot document a link to a James or a Tabitha in NC. IF I had a link between Charles D as the son of James MARTIN therefore as a grandson of Isaac MARTIN I would have a place to begin looking. I THINK Isaac MARTIN is a son of Isaac MARTIN m Margaret "Peggy" but have no proof, not even a clue. I did track Isaac>Isaac who was a brother to Joesph Lynch MARTIN but have no proof that this is he line of Charles D. In order to move forward I need to identify the parents of Charles D. and have not been able to do that. What I do know is that if there was an Isaac MARTIN living in Colonial NC in what became Burke, NC he had to have a Cherokee connection of some kind. The Cherokee were very particular about who was on their land and kept track of it. To live there there had to be a blood headright, marriage to a Cherokee, or an agreement with the Cherokee Nation such as the many Traders who customarily mar! ried a Cherokee woman even if they had a white wife waiting at home. This was not hard to do as the Cherokee had a different outlook on marriage than Europeans. To the Cherokee it was more like "if its good for both of us." A Cherokee women owned everything, the men of her family were obligated to take care of her and her children if something happened in a relationship, this let Traders "marry" a Cherokee woman without worrying about their offspring, therefore, children felt closer to uncles than fathers and often carried their mother's maiden name rather than the father's. Martin. I have in the Goodspeed bio of Charles D. stating his parents were James and Tabitha (Martin) Martin, her maiden name being Martin before her marriage to James Martin - and Charles D.'s grandparents were given as Isaac and Sarah Martin, parents and grandparents all b NC and all were farmers. The bio states that James and Tabitha Martin went to McMinn, Tennessee when Charles D. was about three (3) years old making it about 1821. I have nothing beyond this and no other documentation. I found an Isaac Martin b ca 1750 in Burke, NC with children Hannah, Rachel, Jacob and maybe a Moses and William. This Jacob Martin m a Meyers, went to TN, lived and and died there. I also found an Isaac Martin in the Hamblen Co, TN area with a wife Sarah well before 1820. I THINK this is the Isaac died Lincoln, NC about 1820 but again no proof. Any help at all is greatly appreciated, I will gladly share. I do have an extensive bio on a Moses MARTIN, Revolutionary War soldier whose descendants went to Missouri. You're like a Christmas present in August! I never had the names of Moses and Margaret but if they're the parents of Isaac who w/ Sarah somebody were the parents of Hannah and Rachel and Jacob, yes. That's it. Do you have any other infor on Moses and Margaret other than what you gave me in terms of their marriage? I've always wondered what the nationality of the Martins was. I know several Martins now and they all have different ancestral countries. I believe there was a Jesse James too 1790-1850 who married Tabitha Martin (her maiden name) and fathered Charles. There's even a photo of Charles on my tree that I acquired through this bulletin board. I have Isaac as born in Burke NC and died in Lincoln NC. I have his children as all born in NC except for my ancestor Hannah and I have her as MD. That must be an error. I am also missing her death date but have the dates of the others. Hannah and Rachel's husbands were brothers: Charles and Christian Shell and there was a to! wn near McMinnville called Shellsford for them. Is it your Jacob that had the historic house in TN near there that tourists could go through? I have the Shells way back as well as the descendants of Rachel. Would love to share. Moses and Margaret were married about 1727 in Albermarle. Va. I do not have the name of Isaac's wife but I do have 3 of their children, I am sure there were more. I am working on this. Two daughters, Rachel and Hannah both married Shells and Jacob. Jacob is my line and he married Catheryn Myers. Both were born in N.C. Lucinda Ervin/Erwin was the daughter of Hugh Erwin. She married a John Knox 24 June 1893 in Burke County. John was the son of Billy and Bicky Knox. They had no children. In 1900, she is living in Burke County, listed as married, but no husband is listed. Living with her is Jane Knox who I think is the wife of William H. Knox. I find Lucinda and John in the 1910 and 1920 Burke County census. In 1920 Essie Knox, a child of William H. Knox is living with them. I do not find John, Lucinda, or Sarah Lail in 1930. He died prior to Sarah's death, as she is listed as widowed at the time of her death. She died April 19, 1942 in Icard, Burke Co., North Carolina. Cause of death was a fractured hip due to a fall in her kitchen. Informant was Estelle _rank: Daughter. (can not read first letter of last name) Her parents are listed as Daniel Lail and Harriet Townsend. Sarah is buried at Cline Cememetery. John Theodore Knox died April 6, 1940 in the State Hopsital in Morganton, NC. (Could this be Broughton Hosptial?) At the time of his death, he was married to Sarah Lail. HIs parents are William Knox (born in Ireland, UK) and Sarah Zimmerman. Date of birth is 01 Jan 1871 in Burke Co., NC. There is no cemetery listed on the death certificate, on states that the body was removed from the hospital on 04-08-1940, by Undertaker M. A. Mackie Ba__ of Granite Falls, NC. Informant on death certificate is listed as State Hospital Records, Morganton, NC. Haven't found anything on Lucinda Ervin. What relationship was she to John?
