Go check out the Gowan Foundation which is a genealogy site that has great information for the surnames Goans, Goins, Goings, Gowin, Gowan, etc, as these surnames have been given various spellings. Just type in Gowan Foundation in any search engine, and it will bring up the link to the site..I am thinking it is www.llano.net, but I am not sure...I found alot of information about my Goins ancestors there..Also, you dont have to sign up to be a member, just type in your ancestor's name in the search engine at the bottom right of the page. Good luck, Marti

Derick; This a great update! I thought, perhaps, you might be interested in also listing a link to these Speculation land records which the University of North Carolina -Asheville, D. H. Ramsey Library Special Collections has put online - Speculation Lands Collection (1752 - 1930) [part of their Tench Coxe collection]. I just discovered this tonight and it is really interesting with lots of land which was in the old Burke and Rutherford areas, i. e, Broad River, Second Broad River, Green River, etc. Includes some early maps. http://toto.lib.unca.edu/findingaids/mss/speculation_lands/default.htm I've already found some great stuff here and still looking it over. If you have any interest in Burke County Land Grants (1778-19__), please see http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/landgrnt.htm An undate on the Land Grant project has been submitted by Betsy Dodd Pittman. This will result in a a reappraisal of the way Land Grants are displayed, formatted and presented on the Internet. Hopefully, the end result will to provide an opportunity to view the plat overlayed on a present day topographical map. Charlotte: I just read your post concerning Daniel Goin who married Susannah Inman, sister of Shadrack, Meshack and Abendago, et. al, Inman. My interest in the Inman family comes from my research on the McDowell - McPeeters family. Shadrack Inman married Mary McPeeters, the daughter of Charles and Mary McDowell McPeeters. Have you visited the inman surname web org site online? http://inman.surnameweb.org/sketches/14637.htm which gives and account of the location of Daniel Goan/Goin/Gowin prior to the move to early frontier North Carolina, which says that he is found as a bound boy of Samuel Doak in Augusta Co., VA records. This Samuel Doak appears to be the elder Samuel who was married to Jane Mitchell, and were parents of the well known Revolutionary Presbyterian minister, Rev. Samuel Doak. You may be aware that Rev. Samuel Doak was noted as giving the invocation at the gathering at Sycamore Shoals when the "Overmoutain" men gathered prior to the march to the battle of King's mountain, NC. Daniel Goin is named as a "cited" (suspected) Torie in a summons issued 12 December 1782 by the Clerk of Court of Burke Co., NC. His name is written as "Dan'l Gowin" This court summons sent to the Sheriff to notify the named suspected Tories in the county to appear the "Third Monday in Janry next" (1783) at the Court to give reason why they should not have their property confiscated. There were 121 men named in the summons, among them were Shadrack Inman (brother in law of Daniel Goin), Charles McPeters (father in law of Shadrack Inman), Joseph McPeters (son of Charles McPeters), Jonathan McPeters (son of Charles McPeters), David Melson (Nelson) - relationship to the family is unclear but Jonathan McPeters became guardian to David Nelson,Jr., three Hyatt men who are some way intermarried into the Inman family - Hezekiah Hyatt, Seth Hyatt, Edward Hyatt, and James Barnes, a nephew of Charles McPeters. I honestly have not been able, as of yet, to completely comprehend why these men were cited as being suspected Tories or Tory sympathizers, although it is part of the larger Court martial trial of Gen. Charles McDowell. (Who was the first cousin of Charles McPeters wife Mary McDowell McPeters). It is an established fact that both Joseph and Jonathan McPeters served as Patriots during the Revolution from Burke Co., NC, and I can't really make sense of why they were being cited as Tories at the end of the Revolution, but, perhaps further research will help clarify this. I hope this is some help to you in your search for the parentage of Daniel Goin(s). Charmaine

Surnames: Mitchell, Maderias, Flournoy, Driver, Womack, Christian, and Duffy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5UB.2ACI/2693 Message Board Post: I am searching for the military record of Henry Mitchell, Revolutionary Soldier. I have been told by two reliable sources that my ancestor's service was in North Carolina and to look in the Morgan District. Whether this service was in the Continental Line or not, I have yet to find out. Also, can someone please clarify for me whether the Morgan District was ever part of a region that was mapped to Georgia or another state? After the War: My great, great, great, great, great grandfather, Henry Mitchell, Revolutionary Soldier, settled in Cornucopia in the northwest corner of Jones County, Georgia. Land records are from 1811. Henry owned a grist mill on Falling Creek watercourse. He and his wife, Sarah Maderias Mitchell, helped organize the New Hope/Caney Creek Primitvie Baptist Church in 1813. They brought with them letters from County Line Primitive Baptist Church. Henry and Sarah had nine children. The above information is published in the county history and in the county genealogies of Jones County, Georgia. The will of Henry Mitchell was probated in Jones County, Georgia in 1819 (I have a photocopy). Georgia Land Lotteries and the American Revolutionary War Veteran: In 1827 Henry Mitchell (RS) was a "fortunate drawer" in the Georgia Land Lottery, winning land in Carroll County, Georgia. He was eligible for the number of draws for veterans of the American Revolutionary War. This information is free on the internet from the Georgia Dept. of Archives and History under Revolutionary Soldiers. The name of Henry Mitchell of Jones County appears in "Authentic Listing of American Revolutionary War Veterans and the Georgia Land Lottery". (Those interested in this free information can google on Georgia Department of Archives and History and click on Revolutionary Soldiers). This information is also included in the "History of Jones County, Georgia, 1807-1907", Memorial Edition, by Carolyn White Williams with index by Margaret Heard Stephens on pages 986-987 of the 2003 reprint. It is included under the "Roster Revolutionary Soldiers and Widows". A notation is also made that Henry Mitchell, Revolultionary Soldier, was buried in Jones County, Georgia. Additional published family information is from "Family Sketches of Jones County, Georgia" by Carolyn Mitchell Black, published in Volume 1, Genealogies, "History of the People of Jones County, Georgia," by Frank M. Abbott. The civil records are in Jones County, Georgia. I sure would like to find Henry for all the right reasons. Do the bio. What was Henry's serving? Most sincerely, Terri Anne Hastings
