    1. [NCBurke] NEW HOKE BOOK-call for papers
    2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. The book which has been the best (and only) reference on the HOKE family is to be reprinted. Solicitation for material has been made by the author. If you have anything relating to the HOKE family please read on. --Derick S. Hartshorn ------------------------------------------------- Dear Cousin Hoke, The time has come for which I am sure many of you have impatiently long awaited. It has been 23 years since the genealogy of the Johann Jacob Hoke family I... Hoke, bequeath was printed. I hope that all of you who either have purchased or have had access to a copy of the original have enjoyed your journey through our history. Finally, we have decided to publish Volume II with corrections, updated materials, and additions to the original volume. Hope L (Hoke) McConnell, who was instrumental in helping to collect material for the original book, is now deceased, as are many of the others who helped us. Therefore, I must depend on any and all of you who care to contribute material to help me with this volume. Some of you are my close relatives, some I have met in person, and some I have only spoken to by phone, while others of you have been only readers of my work. However, I implore all of you to help make this work as complete a record as is humanly possible. As you may now know, many corrections and additions can be made, and much new material can be added to this Hoke family history. Perhaps you have discovered errors; have more pictures, stories, or additions; can add all new family lines; or even place some of the fragmented families from Part lI in the original text into their rightful families in Part I. We really do want to make this volume as accurate and as complete as possible, even though we know a genealogy is obsolete by the time it is printed because change comes every second of time---this is the history of a family. I do not plan any further work on this family after this coming volume, but I will continue to collect your material if you wish to send it. However, I leave any subsequent publication in the capable hands of a future generation. We are looking at a one-year time schedule. Therefore, we need you to return your contributions to us by May 30, 2004, since most &the text is to be prepared this summer. Please direct your mailing to one of the following addresses: Jean A. Berlekamp or Miriam K. Fanldaauser 6812 No. C. R. 15 @ Green Springs, OH 44836 [email protected] Furthermore, I can answer any of your questions by phone at (419) 992-4534. We hope to reach as many of you as possible and are, therefore, using snail mail as well as interact access. The format and style of this volume will follow much the same design of the original book; the text will be completely indexed and will contain all material that is sent by you to be published. However, if you send color pictures, they will be rendered in black and white in the text because of the exorbitant price for color pictures in publication. Please double check and proof-read every name, date, and page of your submission. I will take your work in any form you care to send it, but we can only reproduce what you send. We cannot be responsible for incomplete information nor can we guess at information that is not clearly presented. We will return all pictures sent to us either with your book order or by special mailing after the book is published. I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you. However, if you personally do not care to help with the information concerning your family, please ask someone else who might wish to do so. I really do not want to omit any family who wishes to be a part of this history. We are selling the supplement by pre-publication orders only, and only one printing will be run. The cost will be determined by how much material is presented. At the present time we are able to estimate a book of 500-800 pages, hard bound will run between $50 and $70. We do hope that you understand it is very difficult to predict how much material might be sent to us in the next few months; therefore, it is also hard to predict a final price. Please give this letter your immediate attention. Furthermore, fill out the attached order form and enclose it and your down payment to reserve your copies of the book with the information you are submitting for your family. No refunds will be given once the orders have been placed. Only in some extenuating circumstance where we are unable to complete our end of the contract to deliver a book will we refund preorder payments. We will notify you of the balance due, not to exceed $30 as soon as we have a final price so that you can make arrangements to send the balance due. This balance will need to be sent before we can mail the completed volume to you. We are sincerely grateful for your contributions and your support in this major endeavor. Gratefully, your Hoke cousin, Jean A. Berlekamp

    3. The Bill--HB100 passed with some changes to the Bill in the House of Rep., but was never brought up for a re-vote in the KY Senate during this session, so did not become law thanks to the correspondance from the many genealogists who protested. If you have interests in these documents from Kentucky, please voice your protests as it is sure to come up again in the next session.. 1. [NCBurke] 1790 Burke Census
    2. George Pearson
    3. Hello, I have been going throught the 1790 Census for Burke County, NC... there are 11 pages of names, but no townships are indicated. However, I notice that the Census is divided up into Companies, e.g., 11th comp., 12th comp.. Does anyone know what areas of Burke the various companies might represent. If not known directly, perhaps company areas can be inferred by surnames in known areas of Burke. Thanks, George

    1. RE: [NCBurke] KELLY(KELLEY) Families in 1820 Burke County
    2. Nancy Custer
    3. Jonelle, I read your email below with interest. I'm not certain if we have corresponded before so forgive me if I am redundant:) There is a marriage bond dated December 28, 1823 in the North Carolina Archives for William Dorsey and Patsey Kelly. I am virtually certain that these are my ggggrandparents. The bondsman for the marriage was John Dunkin and the witness was Wm F. McKee. My third great-grandparents were William and Martha Dorsey. (Patsey was and is a nickname for Martha.) William Dorsey was the son of John H. Dorsey who started out in Lincoln County, NC (probably really Rowan but the first record of him is in Lincoln County.) John Dorsey moved through Burke and Macon Counties during the early 1800's and eventually settled in Pickens County, SC. I have not yet been able to find parents for Patsey but am actively looking! William and Martha followed along with John Dorsey through Macon County to Pickens County, SC. They settled, I believe, near Salem which is quite close to the NC/SC border. It would appear that at least some of the Kelly's also moved along this route. In the 1830 Macon County census, a Reuben Kelly was living about five houses down from John Dorsey. Reuben Kelly was still living in Macon County in the 1840 census though John Dorsey had moved on to South Carolina as had all of his (known) children. In South Carolina, John Dorsey owned property that was bounded by Alfred Kell(e)y. I also seem to recall a James Kelly in an earlier land record. I took a quick look through my files and can't verify that at the moment. A number of these Dorseys and Kelleys are buried in the Neville Cemetery outside Walhalla, SC. (Land records show that both Dorseys and Kellys owned property adjacent to Alexander Neville.) I believe that Alfred Kell(e)y was in some way connected to the web of Kell(e)ys in Anderson County, SC. I have corresponded with a couple of people who have made a better study than I of the Kell(e)ys in this area. I can put you in touch with them privately if you do not hear from them as a result of your post. At the present time, I don't think we really know for sure how many Reuben and James Kell(e)ys we are actually dealing with--whether all the records for each name in North and South Carolina are for the same or more than one individual. William and Martha Dorsey had two proven sons--Anderson and Elisha as well as two or three probable sons--John H. and Andrew and perhaps another who is yet unnamed. They also had a daughter, Amanda who married Francis Calloway McCall and lived out her life in Jackson County, NC. For many years there was a family rumor that my gggrandfather Harvey Kelley of Cumberland County, TN was actually a Dorsey from near Walhalla, SC. About two years ago, we used DNA testing combined with a few bits and pieces from the public records to show that Harvey was Elisha Dorsey the son of William who changed his name and moved to Tennessee shortly before 1870. You can read the details of that project at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/HarveyKelley.htm. I am working with the hypothesis that Elisha took his mother's maiden name as his alias. In spite of many family stories that purport to explain the circumstances around this name change, we have no idea how or why it happened. We eventually have expanded our DNA project to try to sort out the descendents of Andrew Dorsey who moved into Rowan County from Maryland in the late 1760's. Current results from that project can be seen at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/Results.htm. Specifics about the western North Carolina Dorseys can be seen by clicking on the link for "Andrew Dorsey Line Analysis" near the top of the page. We have several more samples at the lab and are actively recruiting other Dorseys with western North Carolina roots. Though we would not expect a match with our Dorsey/Kelley line, we would be very interested in extending our project to include direct line Kell(e)y males who can trace their lines back to western North Carolina and north western South Carolina in the late 1700's to early 1800's. Well, I see I have wandered away from your original post about the Kelly Families in 1820 Burke County. You can see though that I have a special interest in that same group and will look forward to sharing new ideas and information as they come along. My Immanuel Jackson Dickson was born Oct. 13, 1871, most likely in the Spartanburg, S.C. area. His father was Charles William Dickson, b. 1808. Charles and his two brothers George and Joseph lived in Burke Co. Charles left there after the Civil War and moved to S.C. Charles, Geoge and Joseph were supposedly the only sons of John Dickson who lived his whole life in the Friedberg settlement outside what is now Winston-Salem. It is an interesting story about your Jackson Dickson, however I believe he is at best a cousin.

Surnames: Settlemyer / Settlemeyer/ Settlemire / Dickson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5UB.2ACI/2730.1 Message Board Post: Hi Linda, This information is part of a book by Harry Wilson. He is a Settlemyer / Settlemire researcher. One of my Settlemire ancestors, Sarah M. Settlemire, married a 'Jackson Dixon' of Burke County, NC. If you read the link that I post, you may find some connection to your Immanuel Jackson Dickson and perhaps why this Dickson family might have left the area. The photo that I am linking to this post is 'thought' to be Jackson Dickson and his wife. Dickson and his wife are seated to the left in the photo. My great grandfather and great grandmother (Henry Clinton Settlemyer and Annie Lou Walker), are seated on the right. Good Luck! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harry/233_cyrus_settlemire.htm
