Derick, I have a question about this "Tennessee co., NC." Have you found that it was a legally designated county of NC? I was under the impression that it was known as the "Washington District of NC" and later became a county in Tennessee. I also understand that the line between Tenn. and NC was first proposed to follow the mountains and ridges which separated the waters which flowed westward from those which flowed south. This would have placed parts of Burke, Yancey, Mitchell and some other counties in Tennessee. Could it be that this area may have been loosely called "Tenn. Co., NC"?? G. Folks, To make an issue a little clearer, I have created a new page which describes of the North Carolina / Tennessee connection. This is pretty concise and provides a closer look at the changing colonies nearing the close of the 18th century. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/NC-TNlands.htm Any additions, corrections or comments welcome. --Derick

I have a NJ ancestor, Joseph Clark, who in 1803 executed a deed in which he described himself as "of Tenn County, NC." He probably went there ca 1780 as a child. Where might I look for records for the 1780-1803 period for this locality? Thank you, Judi

Turn left at the blinker light onto Drexel Road. Cemetery is on the left about 3/4 mile. The cemetery lies between interstate and the county road." This volume was published in 1995 so the "blinker light" may no longer be such and could be a regular traffic light by now. There are only 8 burials listed with an additional comment that says "14 graves wirh only plain rocks as markers".
My NC highway map shows the John's River in burke and Caldwell Counties. Also, go to www.mapquest.com Type in Morganton and NC in the search area. When the map comes up, zoom in one time. You can see the river as it runs into the Catawba. Then click on North, and you can see more of the river in Caldwell County.
John's River that I know of is in Caldwell County (formerly a part of Burke) outside of Lenoir...not sure how far it runs? Hi folks, Some of you may have missed a golden opportunity to utilize Burke County resources. Give this page the once-over: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncburke/lookup.htm Some of you have volunteered to perform lookups here. Everyone thanks you! I would like to welcome Dale Cook to our growing list of lookup volunteers. He has agreed to look through the four volumes of "Cemeteries of Burke County" for those needing help.
