Along with my post about the National Allison Family Reunion, I failed to include information about our organization -- the National Allison (Allanson) Family Association. The organization was founded in October, 1996 at the first annual National Allison Family Reunion by 85 charter members. Since that date, we've continuously grown by leaps and bounds, attracting both genealogists and non-genealogists in the family, thanks to our approach that makes family history relevant to all ages and interests and teaches the value of knowing and understanding the "tie that binds" us all into a family of today. The two main on-going projects of the association are the production of the National Allison Family Reunion, now one of western North Carolina's leading heritage events, and publishing our quarterly magazine, The Allison Family Voice. The magazine format publication is loaded with both the news of the past and present of our huge old family and includes a well rounded presentation each quarter. including feature stories on historical family figures, as well family members of today. The organization has drawn together the brightest and best of hundreds of Allison family historians from all around the country and has led to the collection of a mountain of quality family history, plus a massive collection of early family Bibles that have been located. Thousands of historical photographs have also been found thanks to the organization. Moses Ross was at the fall of Charlestown to the British in 1780 and signed the petition of the "Country Militia" to surrender; his signature appears between the signatures of Samuel Chandler and Thos. Compton (Charleston 1897 Yearbook). [Both Samuel Chandler and Thos. Compton can be proven to have lived in that part of Camden District that became Sumter District.] Moses Ross' signature on the petition is "a match" to his signature in his Audited Account #6615 at the SC Archives for 69 days duty from 1-1-1782 to 12-15-1782. State of South Carolina To Moses Ross ... To 69 days Mil. & Lt. Drag. pay a 2/4 Day ... Moses Ross South Carolina was unable to pay at one time the entire debt owed to her soldiers, but gave them an Indent for the amount owed, paying interest for some years. All of the following was taken from papers in Audited Account file for Moses Ross. Indent X148 dated 8-30-1785 issued to Moses Ross: 8 pounds, one shilling, Principal; 11 shillings, 3 pence, Annual Interest. "Recd 30th August 1785 Full Satisfaction for the within, in an Indent X148 .. Moses Ross" Moses Ross signed a paper that on 6-13-1786, he had received 3 years Interest. "I do here by [difficult to read, looks like assign] over my Right Title and interest of this within indent to John Brownlee for [difficult to read, looks like value] Recd. Sept. 29th 1787 [signed] Moses Ross." On 1-4-1788, John Brownlee assigned the account to William Poole. There is no clue in the above Audited Account file as to where Moses Ross was when he signed for receiving his Indent on 8-30-1785, for the interest on 6-13-1786, the sale of the Indent on 9-29-1787. One John Brownlee was living in the city of Charleston on the 1790 SC Census, but this does not necessarily mean that Moses Ross was living in Charleston when the Indent was sold. Another John Brownlee was living in Abbeville Co, SC in 1790. Nothing more was found for Moses Ross in the area that became Sumter District records. If this is indeed Moses, son of Reuben Ross, his father apparently died before 1788 probably in SC. His mother died in 1796 location unknown. His brother Benjamin moved to the Lincoln Co, NC area and later Burke Co, NC, his brother Stephen Ross moved from Clarendon Co, SC to Abbeville Co, SC. I'd also like to add that when people ask for a "look-up" on various Rootsweb lists, those "look-ups" are often provided by people who access their paid Ancestry and Genealogy.com and other subscriptions for the information. That's not really free either. Nevertheless, I see many generous people providing that service. To whom it may concern, As the County Coordinator for the Burke County NCGWP web site and a member of "Picture Burke Project," the Burke County Library, The Burke County Genealogical Society, the Burke Historic Trust and the Burke County Historical Museum, I would like to respond to this particular individual. The non-profit nature of the NCGenWeb Project is certainly not being threatened by the sale of BCGS Publictions. The Society has provided more FREE information to the public than most any other genealogical entities do for a fee. The fact that Burke County, North Carolina historical and genealogical associations have allied together to provide the best possible resources to the public may have been understated on the Burke web page. Publications listed on the Burke County NCGWP page by the Burke County Genealogical Society (a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, as classified by the IRS) is done by me as a courtesy to them. The Burke County NCGW Project has publicized the work of the society and is making available a list of publications the society has for sale. The profits derived from these publications are plowed back into the general fund so that additional books may be published, for the benefit of genealogists everywhere. Many folks are under the illusion that all genealogical data should be free. These individuals have come to be recognized by the genealogical societies as "takers" rather than "givers." By that, I mean that the folks who expect everything to be free have probably never walked a cemetery and recorded data. They have probably never transcribed census' or public records so that others might find a missing ancestor. These same folks seethe when the only source of information they seek is the public library or a subscription genealogical service. The fact of the matter is that these are the selfish among us who always criticize the efforts of others and deign to share what they have with others Nobody is even beginning to suggest that these selfish folks should join a genealogical or historical organization. Most of them don't have the courtesy to credit the sources when they copy genealogical publications anyway. Fortunately, their numbers are small and they don't have much of an impact on real genealogists or the selfless contributions that real researchers make. To this particular critic, I urge you NOT to join the Burke County Genealogical Society. They will certainly not benefit from your membership. You can visit the remaining 2,814 Burke County FREE pages. While copying and you won't HAVE to give credit to anyone and you can download stuff to your heart's content, if your ethics are so inclined. Your complaint is not well recieved by the "givers." As far as "Everything is about joining the Genealogical society and the books they publish," that is about as false statement as I have ever heard. The Society only constitutes only one page among the 2,815 pages on the Burke County Web Site. If you really had a complaint, why didn't you come to me first, the creator of the Burke County NCGWP page??? I am also the CC the Catawba County NC web site and also promote the local society (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/ccgsmain.htm). While I am not a member of their society, I certainly think anyone who advances the cause of genealogy should be recognized for their contributions. Derick S.
