Franklin Heavner, b. abt 1827 and was a resident of Burke County, NC (1850 census)? He was living near the Rich family, and he and Josiah Rich enlisted in the Confederate Army on the same day, Feb 18, 1863. I believe they were brothers-in-law, with J. Franklin being married to Elizabeth Rich, sister to Josiah. J. Franklin Heavner, along with Josiah Rich and Robert Rich (a brother to Josiah) deserted on July 18, 1863. All three returned from desertion in November 1863 and were placed under arrest. All three were court-martialed on or about Jan 19, 1864, sentenced to be executed and shot for desertion January 30, 1864 near Orange Courthouse, Virginia.

    3. If someone has access to Burke County's Cemetery Books might I ask for a lookup for Jacob TAYLOR. He appears in the Caldwell County, King Creek Twp. 1870 Census page 20, dwelling 119, family 141. Both their ages are listed as being 67 years of age. Jacob was born abt. 1804 and dies after 1870. There are no entries for this couple in Caldwell County's Cemetery Books nor can they be found in Catawba County. This couple is my wife's maternal great grandparents. Thank You! Ray Smith

    1. Rachel LAIL and Henry MULL, ca. 1900 - 1920
    2. Teri Tillman
    3. Hi Everyone, I am trying to determine if the Rachel LAIL shown below was a LAIL by birth or if she was the widow of an Unknown LAIL. She appears to have married Henry MULL, a widower, about 1899, possibly in Burke County. Yet in the 1910 census she is listed once again as Rachel LAIL and Henry MULL is listed as a boarder. Is this a mistake? In 1920 she appears again as Rachel LAIL, a widow. Henry MULL appears to have died 1910 - 1920. Rachel's grandson, Merte P. LAIL, who was living with her in 1910, could not be found in 1920. It is possible that Merte was in fact a granddaughter and had married by 1920. In 1920 Rachel is living near the widow Minne / Nannie LAIL, but I have been unable to determine if there was a relationship between these 2 women. I do not know the name of Minnie's late husband. Can anyone shed any light on the identity of Rachel LAIL / MULL? Thank you for your help. Teri Tillman 1900 U.S. Census Henry Mull, living in Burke Co., NC, has a wife named Rachel (40) who is the mother of 1 child who is still living. They have been married 1 year. They are living next door to Timothy LAIL, age 48 (wife Catharine). 1910 U.S. Census Rachel LAIL is a 50 year old single female head of household in Burke Co. She is the mother of 1 child who is still living. Her 10 yr old grandson, Merte P. Lail, is living with her. A 60 yr. old boarder, Henry Mull is also living in this household. He has been married twice. William and Idia (Lydia?) Propst are neighbors as are Frank and Ellen BURNS. James and Mary Lail also live in the neighborhood. 1920 U.S. Census Rachel LAIL, a widow, is 60 yrs. old and living alone in Lower Fork, Burke Co. Neighbors include: Frank and Ella BURNS and children w/ grandfather Jacob DIETZE, Noah and Alice HOYLE, and Minnie / Nannie LAIL (35 yrs. old, married, no husband) and her daughters Rosa and Emma. Minnie's husband may have been Tim LAIL. This Rachel LAIL / MULL appears to have died 1920 - 1930.

    1. Noah LAIL, 1860 - 1924, and his 2nd wife, Ida Lora JOHNSON
    2. Teri Tillman
    3. Hi, I am a new subscriber to the Burke County mailing list. I am a descendant of Joseph and Mary LAIL who lived in Burke County in the first half of the 19th century. Joseph appears as Joseph SAIL in the 1840 census of Burke County. Mary died presumably 1840 - 1850; Joseph and his 2nd wife, Christine)_____ LOWMAN (widow of Unknown LOWMAN), died presumably 1850 - 1860, most likely in Burke County. Joseph's son Peter LAGLE married his first cousin Mary Ann LAGLE, daughter of Henry LAGLE and Margaret HEDRICK, and moved to Catawba County. Peter's son Noah LAIL, my 2nd great-grandfather, spent most of his life in Catawba County, but died in the State Hospital in Morganton 18 April 1924 and is buried somewhere in Burke County. His death certificate did not name the cemetery. His first wife, Polly Holler LAIL, who died in 1912, is buried in Catawba Co. Noah apparently remarried but I have been unable to find out anything about his wife other than that her name was Ida Lora JOHNSON. (Name found in the book, The Lagle / Lail Family in America). I am hoping that someone on this list might be able to help me determine where Noah might be buried. Was there a cemetery set aside for patients at the State Hospital? I know that there is a Lail family cemetery in Burke Co. Could someone who has Volume 4 (I believe that is the correct volume) of the Burke Co. Cemeteries check to see if he is listed there? He might be buried wherever his 2nd wife is buried, but as I could not find her in the 1930 census, I have no idea if she preceded him in death or remarried after his death. I was also unable to find Noah and Ida in the 1920 census. I checked the households of all his living children to no avail. Thank you for your help. Teri Tillman

    1. New FREE Web Site: SMARC - Southern Mountain Ancestor Research Center
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5UB.2ACI/2779 Message Board Post: Researching ancestors who lived in our Tri-State mountain areas of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee just got easier. Carol Ann "C.A.T." Tindell, an 10-year veteran of on-line genealogical research, an 8-year veteran of the USGenWeb Project, and genealogy web site designer, now retired living in Fannin Co, GA, has recently unveiled her latest web site: Southern Mountain Ancestor Research Center - SMARC, for short:... http://www.ancestraldesigns.com/smarc/ For the past several years due to copyright and other issues, on-line genealogical information began to split and migrate across countless personal, project, surname and 'by subscription only' web sites. Trying to learn what resources existed and where to locate them became an on-line navigational nightmare. Even the sites that people could easily find did not always point to all on-line information or include a list of off-line resources and tell how to find them. We think that SMARC has solved these problems.... SMARC, a FREE web site, takes the headaches out of on-line research by categorizing ALL types of resources [on-line and off-line] spanning 32+ counties in the mountain areas of GA, NC and TN, with even more GA mountain counties and parts of SC being added later in 2004. C.A.T. says "Family historians don't really care where on the internet genealogy information is located. They just want to know what is available and be able to quickly find it again and again. If it's a reliable resouce, it's on SMARC.... just point and click !!" SMARC points to resources that are free on-line, on-line by paid subscription, available for purchase on-line, available for purchase off-line, and free off-line resources and where to find them. This vast amount of information is categorized by subject [census, marriages, cemeteries, etc.] just the way we do research..not by county. This makes it easier to track an ancestor's wanderings back and forth across county and state lines and to visually see what categorized resources are on-line vs. off-line. C.A.T. says, "We want our SMARC visitors to know what resources are available, to have a choice as to type of resources they use that match their genealogy budget, and to make genealogy in our Tri-State area much easier. After all, studying one's family tree is supposed to be fun and exciting." SMARC is also a PERMANENT and FREE repository for this area's transcribed genealogical raw data as well as out-of-print books not slated for re-printing. SMARC is part of C.A.T.'s owned domain, www.ancestraldesigns.com, which publishes all of her genealogy web sites. SMARC is privately funded and can assure that individual submitter's copyrights stay with the submitter, that it will not burn it onto CDs and sell it, nor will it suddenly move it to a 'must pay to see it' password, secured site. SMARC is committed to providing 'free access' of all of its transcribed public records. SMARC is also committed to promoting sound genealogical practices in line with the standards set forth by The National Genelogical Society. It also stresses the importance of NOT publishing on-line identifying information about living persons. SMARC includes helpful genealogy educational information, as well as tips, tools, and how-to's. It is designed for seasoned researchers as well as newbies. ********************************************************** for SMARC logos to include on your website with a link back to SMARC, please visit SMARC and click on the 'link to us' button in the upper right hand corner. ********************************************************** To see all of C.A.T.'s other FREE genealogy web sites, visit www.ancestraldesigns.com submitted by Ms. Carol Ann "C.A.T."
