He was probably at Broughton Hospital in Morganton which is still open. The hospital is located on Sterling Street and the cemetary is behind the hospital. The library there has old records. A list of the folks buried there can be accessed -- Broughton has a website. I think it is broughtonhospital.org I believe information on the buried folks can be found at that site or that site may have links. Broughton is indeed a psychiatric hospital that has been around since the late 1800s -- beautiful campus. I worked there until relocating. I also had an uncle that was a patient there for 15 years in the 50s -- my family too kept quite about what the problem was. Good luck in your search!

    3. Hi, In response to your question: "The newest version of Familytreemaker just came out. This site shows how much they changed the format from ftm 11. I am wanting to know from someone if it looks like a good investment to purchase the program or just stick with version 11." I've been using FTM since it first came out in a Windows version over 10 years ago. I currently use version 11. I held off getting version 10 because of very little improvement in the software. I got version 11 even though I still did not see much improvement. I have yet to benefit or use any of the version 10 & 11 features. When I received the email announcing the latest version - 2005, I checked out this new version and was very disappointed in the supposed improvements offered. When it comes to managing my FTM data and assisting me in my efforts, this new version does me no good. I don't need FTM to do Google searches for me. I do not have a need to post my data to the web in FTM's format. I want better database management of my Gen. data, easier data entry features, more printout features and better export to Excel features so that I can manipulate/print my data in ways that FTM does not take the time to attempt to build into their product! FTM needs to get back in the business of improving the utility of their flagship software product and to listen to what their users want & need improved in this product rather than being totally fixated in their pursuit of maximizing their profits. Just my opinion. Mike Fairfax, VA

Neat to see how county lines have changed over the years and how you can live in the same location but be located in 3 different counties in a 10 year time frame. http://www.mycensusmaps.com Links to county Census maps. Kinda like the above link only shows every ten years and overlays the previous census year so you can compare the two. VERY USEFUL. http://www.ftm2005.com/ The newest version of Familytreemaker just came out. This site shows how much they changed the format from ftm 11. I am wanting to know from someone if it looks like a good investment to purchase the program or just stick with version 11. *************************************************

    1. Civil War Vets (Burke) Ransom L. Rich
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Rich, Poteet, Hains, Blanton, Hamrick, Braddy, Smawley, Dickson, Denton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5UB.2ACI/2784 Message Board Post: Recently I was at the local library and found a census that was taken from the 1st Monday in June until July 1, 1890. It was North Carolina 1890 Civil War Veterans Census by Sandra Lee Almasy, copyright 1990, Kensington Glen Publishing Co., 103 Meadow Ave., Joliet, Illinois 60436. In this census, I found under Burke County, page 1, Enumeration District #54, Silver Creek, G. F. Chase Enumerator: House #222, Family #225 Ransom L. Rich, Landsman, Navy, Montgomery, 1863 to June 1865, 2 yrs. "Discharge papers in hand Blake Person, agent." House #225, Family #228 Andrew J. Epley, Navy, Montgomery, 1863 to June 1865, 1 yr 6 mo. P. O. Bridgewater, "Discharge papers". On the cover page was the following: "In 1889 Congress directed the Department of Census to cause to be taken on a special schedule of inquiry, acording to such form as he may prescribe, the names, organizations, and length of service of those who served in the Army, Navy or Marine Corps of the United States in the war of the rebellion and who are survivors at the time of said inquiry..." Some enumerators exceeded their instructions - supposed to record only survivors and widows of the Union forces, they also listed many confederates." ( These confederates were supposedly so marked as confederates or lined out on the forms ) The listings for Ransom and Andrew were not marked as Confederate or lined out. Which would indicate that they served for the Union only. However, I found on Ancestory.com that Ransom L. Rich served in Co A, 6th N.C. Infantry as a private. However I could not find him listed in NC TROOPS 1861-1865 A ROSTER Compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr. Ransom's brother John L. Rich served in Co A, 6th Regiment N. C. Troops, was wounded at Gettysburg, captured in Virginia in November 1863 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released on January 23, 1864 after taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the U. S. Navy. I wondered if this could have been the case with Ransom, tho I have found no record of him being captured, and according to the above census, he joined the Navy 6 or 7 months prior to John taking the oath and joining. Did Ransom L. Rich serve with the South and with the North, or just with the North only?
