Porter that married Mary Ann McLelland in Bladen County. I have more information on some of the other Porter families. 1. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 3176 (0336) John Jones 300 acres; issued Nov 23, 1764…W side of NW Cape Fear River above the mouth of Carvers Creek and supposed to be surplus land held by John Porter “of Virginia”…(land on SW side of NW River, being a place known as Porters Neck, and begins at a hickory on the river bank by Samuel Ashe’s lower corner) 5. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 785 (3588) Griffith John McRee 640 acres; grant #400 issued…land on SW side of NW (Cape Fear) upper part of a patent to John Porter of Virginia, begins at Samuel Ashe’s lower corner…1.5 chains below Davis Landing 6. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 4259 (01418) Owen Grady 640 acres; warrant #107 issued May 14, 1772…NE side of NW (Cape Fear), begins at Cedar Swamp and back of Thomas Owens’ land…land joins John Porter 7. Deed, Hugh Porter…Hugh Porter, a cooper, sold a lot in Elizabethtown in 1774, Book 19, page 541. 8. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 2040 (4845) John Yates 20 acres; warrant #11126 issued Sep 1, 1786…for 20 acres on E side of Porters Swamp, between John Porter and John Branton’s lines… 9. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 1631 (4436) Robert Reaves Jones 200 acres; warrant # 70 issued Feb 13, 1786…for 100 acres on E side of Ashpole Swamp…Samuel Porter, chain carrier… 10. From Bladen County, NC, Land Warrants 1778-1803: 1291 (4096) William Singletary 100 acres; warrant #1516 issued Oct 1, 1781…SW side of Jones Creek, on both sides of Bryer Branch, joins … Samuel Porter… 11. Deed, William H. Porter to Thomas D. McDowell…in consideration of the sum of $100…tract of land on the S. side of the N.W. (Cape Fear)…200 acres being part of 640 acres patented by John Moorehead on 1 April 1800…beginning at the stake or pointer at the 7 mile post on the Fair Bluff road…David Bryan’s corner…to a stake or pointer on McRee’s line…The condition of this indenture is such that where-as the said William H. Porter is justly indebted to the said Thomas D. McDowell in the sum of $210 due by 2 notes of $105 each payable on or before the 1st of April 1852 and dated the 6th May 1861 (?? Should this be 1851??) as on reference to the note will more fully explain and whereas the said William H. Porter’s honestly desirous of securing the payment thereof now therefore if the William H. Porter shall on or before the first of April 1852 fully pay off and discharge the said debt then this inden! ture and every part and clause shall be void otherwise to remain in full force and effect. In testimony whereas I have herein to set my hand and seal the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered in presence of A.J. Jones and David Callehan…signed Will H. (his mark) Porter…Note..Thomas D. McDowell was the administrator of Samuel McLelland’s will. When the 1850 census was taken, Samuel McLelland was staying at Thomas D. McDowell’s house. Thomas McDowell or his wife could have been kin to Samuel McLelland or William H. Porter. Book ?, page 551. 12. Guarantor of bond for J.G. Melvin, Master of Equity for Bladen County…1 April 1868…Our William H. Porter, along with John G. Melvin, R.P. Melvin, Dunnan Kelly, A.W. Melvin, R.M.DeVane, W.A. Bizzell, J. Mc. K. Melford, and R. P. Allen guaranteed a bond for J. G. Melvin, Clerk or Master of Equity for Bladen County. Our William H. Porter probably had some sort of business relationship, kinship or friendship with most if not all of this list. We may learn more about our William by studying the other men on this list. J. Mc. K. Melford was the administrator of our William H. Porter’s will. William’s oldest son, Samuel T. Porter, married a Melvin. Book ?, page 403. 13. Deed, Robert Porter and wife Rebecca to William Stith…19 April 1870…in consideration of the sum of $14.00…lot of land on the South side of Baal Branch…beginning South side of the public road…links to the ditch at Baal Branch…. Book 5, page 546. 14. Contract, Rinaldi and Company and William H. Porter…14 August 1871…Rinaldi and Company agrees to advance William H. Porter money and funds not exceeding $1,000 for the purpose of enabling William H. Porter to produce turpentine during the year 1871 on the (looks like) Biffont or Bissent plantation…Porter agrees to sell to Rinaldi all of the turpentine which may produce on the lands above described during the year 1871…Interest to be applied to the payment of any sum which may be due and owing to the said Rinaldi and Company and also to the payments of the rents due Messr Hull and Lyon and Dr. W.A. Bizzell and balance, if any remains, to be paid to Porter, his heirs or assigns…Book ? page 227. A North Carolina business directory (Thomson’s) dated 1851-52 lists W.S. Rinaldi as a general dealer in dry goods, groceries, etc. 15. J. McK Robeson to W. H. Porter…10 January 1874…Robeson to lease William H. Porter his farm…lying on Bakers Creek…joining the line of Thomas McDowell, William H. White…farm formerly owned by David Lewis…lease for ten years…yearly rent of one fourth part of crops raised by (Porter)…Robeson can pasture his hogs in any ungathered peas…Book ? page 289. 16. Deed, William H. Porter to John Monroe…certain tract of land S. side of Crawley Swamp…part of a 290 acre survey conveyed to the aforesaid Porter and Munroe cojointly by Duncan Cromartie and wife and Mrs. E. A. McKay (?)…to the deed of conveyance bearing a date of June 5th 1872, the intention of this indenture being to effect an equtable division of the aforesaid 292 acres between the said Porter and Monroe…Porter relinquishes all claims to that porton of the said 290 acres beginning at the run of Crawley Swamp and running…to David Hester’s line…to a stake Penter (?) Guyton’s corner…then to Guyton’s (or old Edward Russ) line…to the run of Crawley Swamp thence down the said run as it meanders to the beginning and containing (looks like) 133 acres more or less…dated 6th of August 1874. Book 21, page 527. 17. Deed (or division), John Monroe to William H. Porter…certain tract of land containing 292 acres on the S. side of Crawley’s Swamp…for a more complete description see deed of conveyance bearing date June 5th 1872 (note, the June 5th 1872 deed has been lost or destroyed, not on file at Bladen court house, JOJ)…Monroe relinquishes all claims to that portion of the said 292 acres beginning at the run of Crawley Swamp and …to David Hester’s line and …near William Guyton’s fence, Kelly’s corner and thence as the Kelly line…to the run of Crawley’s Swamp, thense up the run as it meanders to the beginning…containing 146 acres, more or less…dated August 6th 1874…Book 21, page 454. 18. Deed, William C. Porter, dated 3 November 1871…shares of homestead tract of land of James N. Porter…Alston Allen (wife Emily J. Allen) to William C. Porter…Book 4, page 246. 19. Deed, James H. Porter, 1871…from John Squires to James H. Porter, witnessed by W.C. Porter…Book 4, page 425. 20. Deed, Ethelred Porter and wife Mary…1833… Book 10, page 116. 21. Deed, Young R.
