This relates to the message posted on 12/3/05, Subj: Samuel Porter I don't have details on the family of Samuel Porter (or if he is related to the Porters below), but I am showing the lineage from James Henry Porter (m. Sarah Cooper) down to Riles Alex Porter below. Please note that I am using the first name as "James" for Henry Porter who m. Sarah Cooper because a monument in the old Porter Cemetery in Kelly, NC shows the names as James Henry Porter and Sarah Cooper whereas our research for this Porter has revealed the name as Henry Porter in Court minutes for Sampson County for the period 1800-1840. Also Henry Porter is listed in the 1810 and 1820 US Census for Sampson County. James N. Porter was in Sampson County in 1840 based on some Feb 1840 court minutes. The first appearance of James N. Porter in the Bladen Census was in 1850 when he was age 37 which would indicate a YOB of 1813. There was a James Porter in the 1830 Sampson Co. Census age 20 and under 30 who had two sons under 5 but the ages for the sons didn't fit James N. Porter as a son. Gen 1: James Henry Porter b.1775-1785 m. Sarah Cooper b.1789 Gen 2: James N. Porter b. 1813-1815 m. Nancy Butler b. 10/20/1814 Gen 3: Young Riles Porter b.7/3/1852 m. Francenia Edwards b.3/27/1856 Gen 4: Riles Alex Porter b. 2/13/1891 m. Pauline Priest b. 8/24/1898 Some researchers on Porters have missed the generation of James N. Porter b. 1813-1815 who married Nancy Butler b. 10/20/1814 of Sampson County. The names of James N. Porter (and wife Nancy's) children provided clues that led to the discovery of Nancy's maiden name (Butler) and earlier ancestors and relations including Cooper, Coore, Royal, and Blackman, etc. Wayne A. ---------------------Message posted 12/3/2005---------------------- On Samuel Porter & Sarah of Bladen County, I think they had at least four sons, maybe even some daughters. In an old book on "Abstract of Wills", Bladen County, one dated September 30, 1757, Samuel Porter: Sons-James, John, Hugh & Samuel Jr. I'm pretty sure Samuel lived in what is now Sampson County owning land on the Great Cohaire Swamp. Also, Samuel Jr received a 200ac land grant between Bryan's Swamp and the Two mile swamp,No 424. About my Porters. Grfather: Riles Alexander Porter, greatgrfather: James Henry Porter& GreatGreatgrfather: Henry Porter from Sampson County.
