Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 20:05:49 EDT Subject: [NC DIVISION SCV LIST] Hurricane Katrina Destroys Beauvoir *NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION, SCV--Beauvoir, the Home of President Davis, is Destroyed (August 30, 2005) A Message from Commander Sweeney* ** * ************************************************************************************************** *Gentlemen: I have received a 2nd hand report from someone in the Biloxi area that Beauvoir has been destroyed. There were 30' surges of water, in addition to 150mph winds, that blasted away at the structure. The pirate ship casino on the shoreline in front of Beauvoir is completely missing. Rumors are that everything within a mile of the beach in that area was completely destroyed. I have not been able to confirm this with anyone in the Mississippi Division; telephone lines and other means of communications are down in that area. If these unconfirmed reports are true, it is indeed a sad day for the SCV and for all the South. Beauvoir is a priceless link to our heritage and if it is gone, a piece of our souls has gone with it. My heart goes out to the members of the Mississippi Division. This is a time when all members of the SCV must pull together. You can be assured that the National SCV will do all it can to help the Mississippi Division. I will send out more information as I receive it. Denne A. 3. Sam, I got an email yesterday that said the frame of the house was still standing BUT, as I said, that was yesterday. This is heartbreaking. 3. From The Mailing List of the Alabama Division Sons of Confederate Veterans. I wanted to pass this along to everyone on the many lists I am on. Le Gentlemen, Beauvoir still stands! Battered, damaged and in need of repair, the house is still standing. Obviously, there will be a tremendous amount of work required to restore the structure. A film crew from WLTB in Mississippi <http://www.wlbt.com/> http://www.wlbt.com captured some footage of the damage to the region. Click on the Skycopter on the Gulf Coast--Second Tour link on their main page. about 12 minutes into the video they get to Beauvoir.
