The British fleet occupied Ocracoke from July 12-16, 1813. Many men from Bladen County volunteered for the militia to fight the British. Two of these men were Benjamin Devane and Benjamin Robeson Devane, Sr. The former was born 1796 in New Hanover County, NC. He was one of the seven children of John Devane, Jr. (1775-1802) and wife, Ann Julia Davis, widow of a Mr. Evans. This Benjamin Devane's two brothers, William Devane and Francis Devane, also served in the War if 1812. Benjamin Devane (1796-1878) married Mary Rogers of New Hanover County. They moved to Georgia and later to Florida. They, too, had seven children. Benjamin died 28 October 1878. The family is buried in Florida. The Latter Benjamin Robeson DeVane (4 February 1783-1858), son of James DeVane (1757-1840) and Ann Robeson, was born in New Hanover County, NC and died in Bladen County. They had four children: Benjamin Robeson DeVane (1829-1897), Bryant DeVane (1830), Mary DeVane (1833), who married a Mr. Cotter, and Francis Davis DeVane (1835-c1891). Benjamin R. DeVane, Sr. died 1858 in Bladen County. James DeVane (1757-1840), Francis Davis DeVane (1756-1847), Benjamin R. DeVane, Sr. (1783-1858), John C. DeVane (1790-1864) and other DeVanes are buried in Sampson County. . . " (Note: directions are given to the cemetery) 397 BENJAMIN ROBESON DEVANE,JR "Benjamin Robeson DeVane, Jr. (22 April 1826-11 October 1897) (CSA) was a son of Benjamin Robeson DeVane (1783-1858) and Ann Davis, daughter of Francis Davis and Tibitha DeVane (first cousins). Benjamin "Bennie" married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Cain (25 November 1839-29 August 1919), daughter of William Cain, Jr. (17 October 1809-27 January 1866). Bennie and Betsy were married 23 December 1858 at the home of the bride by Wesley Purdie, Esquire. According to the Diary of Elizabeth E. Robeson, ". . they had a pleasant party. . .' They resided in White Oak and are buried in the D.B. Melvin Cemetery. Bennie and Betsy had two children: Charles Thomas DeVane (18 September 1859-2 March 1945) married Virginia "Jennie" Jones (17 October 1868-1934). Their children were Benjamin Cleveland DeVane (1884-1967), Thomas Franklin DeVane (1887-1950), Boyd B. William Francis (Franklin) DeVane (10 September 1861-30 May 1949) married Sarah Margaret Byrd (24 September 1867-3 January 1920). . . " Note: Their children are listed. I descend from TABITHA DeVANE (B1805-1812, I have seen both dates) and JAMES M. BROWN (B. 1802). I believe Tabitha is the Daughter of GEORGE DeVANE. I have no proof that the TABITHA that is the daughter of GEORGE DeVANE is MY TABITHA that married JAMES M. BROWN.
