The inclusion of their ages in these volumes made the difference. >From North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865. a Roster, compiled by Louis H. Manarin, State Department of the Archives, Raleigh, 1968. Volume II Samuel J. Taylor enlisted at age 14 October 7, 1861, joined for duty in Craven County December 10, 1861 for 12 months service. Detailed as scout December 19, 1862 and company muster rolls have him as absent on detail through October 1864. Volume I Samuel J. Taylor enlisted in New Hanover County at age 38, May 29, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for through December 1864. (This one seems to the closest match for your ancestor) I won't forget.
