    2. Butch Butler
    3. Miss Dee, Firstly, Thank you for your time and patience in working on this for me, BUT..............the information you found was for Robert Asa Butler b. 1735, d. 1802, who was the son of Robert Asa Butler b. bef. 1703, d. 1769. Hope you can see my dilemma. Here's what I have on Robert: Robert Butler is first found in the Edgecombe Precinct of Bertie County, NC where he witnessed a land deed in 1724. He witnessed other deeds in 1734, 1736 and 1737. By this record, he would have been born prior to 1703 if we assume that he was at least 21 years of age at the time of the signing of the deed. -------------- There is a Robert Butler who witnessed a deed from Jacob Rickes of the Bertie Precinct in North Carolina to Jonathan Robinson of the Lower Parish of the Isle of Wight...110 acres in the Upper Parish on Kingsale Swamp adjoining John Scott, Daniel Story, and the land of Robert Wilkins and now Ann Musser's (being part of a grant of land from Samuel Kenady deeded to Daniel Story on 26 September 1719 who deeded one half of the same to Jacob Ricks on 28 November 1729.) Witness: Robert Butler, Thomas Boyer, and James Holland Signed Jacob Ricks Date 22 January 1732 Isle of Wight County, Virginia, Deed Book 4, page 226. ---------------- In 1739, Edgecombe Precinct became Edgecombe County, and in that year Robert Butler signed a deed as follows: He sold 200 acres of land for 30 pounds to William Taylor and in the deed noted his wife Anne. The deed is dated: 12 July 1739. Robert Butler of Edgecombe County to William Taylor (Taler) 12 July 1739, 30 pds. for 200 acres on SS Merattuck River adj. Francis Rountree, John Ballard. Witness: Needham Bryan, Jurat, Susan Bryan, William Bryan November Court 1739 (Bertie County Deed Book E, page 533.) (Colonial Bertie, Mary Best Bell, page 146.) ---------------------- Sometime after 1741, Robert Butler and wife Anne moved to Johnston County, North Carolina. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1748 in Johnston County. ---------------------- Several years later he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Duplin County. ---------------------- On 04 August 1748, Robert Butler, Anne Butler, and William Butler witnessed the will of John Wood. The same was probated in the Johnston County court in June Court of 1750 at the Walnut Creek Courthouse. Anne Butler is thought to be the daughter of John Wood. This area was later Dobbs/Greene County, North Carolina. ------------------------ Robert Butler and his family moved to Duplin County before 1756. ----------------------- Robert Butler witnessed several deeds in Duplin County in 1756. ----------------------- A deed dated 13 July 1756 records Robert as purchasing land lying in the fork of the Black River of Duplin County. Duplin County Deed Book 2, pages 348-349. ----------------- A land deed from Henry Easterling of Dobbs County to John Tyner of Johnston County was witnessed by Robert Butler and Ann Butler on the 13 of August 1760. --------------- Other deeds are: To William Butler from John Crumpler, land on the West side of the Great Coharie. 12 February 1765 Witnessed by Robert Butler. --------------------- He subsequently purchased several tracts on the West side of the Great Coharie. -------------------- Robert Butler Sr. to Robert Butler Jr. 280 acres of land on the West Side of the Coharie. (Portion of this land is from a patent granted 24 April 1762 to Robert Butler Senior, adjacent to land of Robert Butler purchased from Robert Allen 13 July 1756.) 11 February 1765 Duplin County Deed Book 1, page 40. ------------------------ Thanks again Dee, Butch ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++ -----Original Message----- From: Dee Thompson [mailto:d7777@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 10:38 PM To: 'Butch Butler'; NCBLADEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: In Search Of a NC Will......... Butch, Sometimes I try too hard - from the new Marylanders to North Carolina book to every remotely connected book that I could think of. Next, on to the subscription genealogy sites that cost me my back teeth (I did find the whole family on OneGreatFamily with Robert Asa's everywhere). Now, why not just check the Sampson County Will Book even though he supposedly died in Duplin. What a simple idea. >From # 116 BUTLER, Robert 26 Mar. 1802 Wife Delilah Butler - negro woman Jean & negro boy Henry; lifetime right to plant. Whereon I now live, then to son Robert. Delilah was the daughter of John Royal b. 1719 in Pasquotank County, NC and Sarah. Reddick had a sister Rhoda Rhodes that was 2 years younger. Delilah Royal was married twice, first to William Rhodes. William was a Tory and his lands were confiscated in 1782-1784. William moved to Horry County, South Carolina. This marriage was ended, I do not know how. Delilah married second to Robert Butler of Sampson Count y, North Carolina. Both surnames, Rhodes and Butler can be found on early records from Isle of Wight County, Virginia. It just so happens that I have the Isle of Wight volumes so let me know if we chase them there. Hi Dee, Robert Butler was b. bef. 1703 in Edgecombe Precinct, Bertie Co., NC and d. 1769 in Duplin Co. His father MAY have been William. He m. Anne Wood ca. 1735 in Edgecombe. Their children were: Robert, William, John, James, Jesse and Charles. I would like to see if there is a will or other estate record for Robert. His middle name may have been Asa. I looked over your library and it seems you have several references that cover that time and place. I hesitate to ask for you to check a specific reference since there are so many possibilities, so if you don't mind, please just use your best judgement as to where to look.
