    3. Bladen Bunch, would y'all check me on these definitions? Hi Linda, There is never a charge for any lookup. land entry was the first step in the acquisition of a piece of vacant or unclaimed land. A person would submit a claim to an appointed official that described the land he wanted (acres, nearby reference points, or neighboring owners). warrant and survey were the second and third steps in acquiring a piece of land. After the land entry was made, the official issued a warrant to the county surveyor for the piece of land in question to be surveyed. Both the warrant and the survey might result in more detailed descriptions than the entry had shown. The survey could result in a change of the acreage, for instance some of the land desired might already be owned by someone else. Frequently the original entry was changed to conform to the survey. The warrant and the survey were then forwarded to the Secretary of State. Step four was the issuing of a grant by the state for the requested land. The person receiving the grant usually had a number of months to register this grant, but a number of persons never did this. The reasons for failure to register a grant ranged from not having the money to pay for all the costs (fees) involved to dying before the land was registered. If the piece of land was not registered within the given time (usually 12 months but many years in Georgia) the land went back into the available category. land grant (step four) is public land that is awarded by a government (usually the state) to a person or persons, or in the case of North and South Carolina, by the Lord's Proprietors who were local representatives of the King. land patent ("grants of patents") is again the conveyance of public land to an individual. conveyed means a transfer of title (by Will, by sale, by grant, etc.) abstracts are short forms of a longer legal document. Books of Abstracts are brief records of a transaction that gives only the highlights such as names, dates, counties and brief description of type of document (marriages, Wills, land sales, etc.). Literally it means a "abstracted information". Let me know everything that you already have on the Iveys so that I don't duplicate data.
