Hi Ted, Note: # 3 (of the "Betty" lookup below has a wrong date of newspaper publication: it should be October 20th, 1846. 1. When I do a lookup for someone I include everything that I can get my hands on. So the reference to (additional information) did not come from me - it is in Bess's book and refers to the availability of additional information on that entry at the courthouse. She means that it was too lengthy or irrelevant for her to include. The full text will be found in the North Carolina State Archives. I copied everything on Constant Johnson that was in both of her books. 2. There is no will for him in NC Testator's. 3. Not a clue. 4. He is not shown in the three Cumberland Cemetery books that I have. 5. I can find nothing on Elijah or Willie F. Moore - not even their Wills. 6. No, there's no additional mention of him, probably because of the dates. Ted, I am so sorry that you had to wait so long for so little. You responded to Betty on Sept 9, 2001 with this info: 1. D in this town on Sunday last, Seldon Jonson, infant son of Mr. Constant Johnson. (Aug 8, 1826) 2. M at the residence of Constant Johnson, Esq., on Hay Mount, on Thursday, Mr. William Taylor to Miss Elizabeth Babcock (May 30, 1838) 3. D at his residence in Hay Mount on Thursday, Mr. Constant Johnson, a native of Middletown, CT (additional information) (Oct 13, 1846) 4. M on Thursday, Richard P. Freeman of Brunswick county to Miss Laura, eldest daughter of the late Constant Johnson. ( Nov 6, 1849) 5. M in this town on the 1st, Willie F. Moore to Miss Sarah J. Johnson, daugher of the late Constant Johnson (Aug 6, 1850) Here are my questions about Constant Johnson: 1. What additional information is available about his death ( item 3 above) ? 2. Did he leave a will? I have been unable to find a reference to his will or his estate. I have a copy of the estate papers of his wife, Maria Miller Johnson. 3. What was the cause of his death? 4. Where is he buried? 5. Also, if you can find out more about Willie F. Moore, I would appreciate. I think he was in some type of retail business. One of the daughers of Constant, Susan, married Elijay Moore, who had a wholesale grocery business in Fayetteville. Constant and John Hall had a large grocery supply business and Elijay may have been made a partner, or maybe he was a competitor. 6. Willie Moore died early and there may be information in the Tyner book about him. Thanks. I hope this isn't too much to ask of you. Constant Johnson was the father of my great great gandmother, Sarah Jane Johnson Moore Cannon. I recently visited her grave for the first time at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington. I am interested in the two books you mentioned by Bess Tyner and the additional information she may have had on Constant. I have some conflicting information about him, e.g., that he was a Silversmith in Fayetteville for several years. He later was 50% owner of the steamboat "Henrietta" that operated between Wilmington and Fayetteville and brought many of the Scottish immigrants to the Valley of the Scots. He and Mr. Hall also owned a Cotton Mill in Fayetteville. I was surprised to see "Esq" after his name. He married Maria Miller on Aug 12, 1819. On the 1850 census, she shows her birthplace as "Conn". One would think they were married in Conn or she came down to Fayetteville to marry him. He was a partner from 1815 to 1817 with Jehiel Johnson and John H. Hall in Middletown, CT as Johnson Hall & Co. My records show that he was working after 1818 as a pewtersmith in Fayetteville. He must have had some success in his ventures. If you have additional information from the Bess books, I would like to have. Thanks. Ted M. Kennedy, Jr Atlanta, Ga tmkjr@bellsouth.net
