1. [NCBLADEN-L] ROBESON COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK PROJECT UPDATE & INFO
2. THE ROBESON COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK UPDATE AUGUST 15, 2001 The last meeting of the Robeson County Heritage Book was held Tuesday, August 14th, 2001 in the McLeanRoom at the Robeson County Public Library in Lumberton, NC with an excellent attendance. Besides the publisher, Don Mills [Walworth Publishing], also in attendance was Ms. Billie Faye Evans of the Bladen County Project, [who reported that 300 more of the Bladen County books are being reprinted by the publisher as we speak]. She gave us much insight, and offered her services to assist with the Robeson County project. Brochure update: Brochures are briefly delayed due to unavoidable circumstances, but we should have them in by or before September 10th, 2001. I have had many questions concerning the mechanics of this Project, some of which are listed below: ***QUESTIONS ***How many words and picture may I submit? Answer: As for thefamily stories, it has been divided up into two areas. First will be the more modern families, those born, lived, died or resided in Robeson County after the year 1850 up to the present. Forthose subjects the writer may submit 500 words of history and one picture for publication. For those subjects who were here before the year 1850, then you may submit an additional 500 words of “First Families” history, and an additional picture. ***How do I arrange my stories to comply with the publishers Needs? Answer: How toarrange these stories will be listed in the brochure, but here are some general rules to follow until you get the brochure. 1) The Title of the Story, 2) The body of the story [double-spaced / typed or word processor], 3) at the bottom the name and address of the Submitter, 4) The sources used, 5)Word Count, and 6) the caption youwish to be used with your picture(s) [ten words or less]. ***What if I have more than one family story that I wish to Submit? Answer: Pleasecontact me via e-mail or phone. Wherethere is a will, there is a way! The basic plan to make this book successful and get it published is to sale at least one copyof the book per story submitted. That is why of the low pre-pub- lication price. Nowto stay within these quidelines, if you wish to submit more stories find someone in your family who plans to by a book and submit it jointly with them. Many of us has sisters, brothers, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins whowould like a book, but just will not write a storythemselves. You just send them the story, let them complete the order form, andthen put their address as the submitter, then list yourself asthe compiler/writer giving your name and address. Also remember to cite your sources after your name and address. Please remember, most of us have more than one line, and so do Ialso. Personally, I plan to do the same thing with my otherlines. In Robeson County Terms this is called “farming it out”. ***Where do I submit my stories to for publication? Answer: I have hadmany questions as to the submission of stories. Once the Brochures come out officially, there will be a Post Office Box listed for you to mail your stories in to the committee. At this point we are not planning to receive any Stories via the e-mail/internet. ***What happens if I go over the word limit or would like to put in additional pictures? Answer: Noproblem! If you happen to go over, it is only 10 cents a word over, and $12.50 for additional pictures. Now for a hardbound timeless treasurer like this no one can disput the nominal overage fees. Information concerning additional criteria, examplesof stories, and how to prepare your stories, along with restrictions and other details will be in the brochure. So far we have received over 650 names and smailing addresses of folks who interested in the Robeson County Heritage Book Project. These names have come to us via the internet, and especially by announcements such as this on the various Rootswebs Mailing List [ROOTSWEBS, Thank you so much!!!]. The Robeson County Heritage Book is being written by hundreds of people who submit stories on their Robeson County connected ancestors. If your ancestors were from Robeson Co NC, then we encourage you to submit stories on your Robeson Co NC ancestors. Ifyou do not put your family's story in the book then no one else probably will, and the end result is that they will be left out of the publication. Youdon't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to write a story. You can make your stories just as simple, or just as elaborate, as you wish. You can even take an obituary, add birth, death and marriage dates, names of parents, list all children, and any interesting facts and/or stories about your subject that you would like to relay to other readers, and especially to your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc… This book will be a treasure to all, who are interested in Robeson County, her families. If you are interested in this project and would like to be placed on the mailing list to receive a brochure [brochures should be in from the publisher by late July], then send us your name and smailing address to the e-mail address listed below so we may send you a Robeson County Heritage Book Brochure. Please do not send any stories, etc… until after you Have received your brochure. SAWESTGTWY@gateway.net Or Sam_West@ncsip.duke.edu Thanks, Sam West Lumberton, [Robeson County] North Carolina
