>From # 17 728 THE SHIPMAN FAMILY "Daniel Shipman . . on 20 February 1735 he received a land grant for 150 acres located about eight miles south by southeast of Fayetteville, west of and at the Big Bend in the Cape Fear River (generally known as Carver's Bend or Carver's Neck) below Rock Fish Creek and Dunn's Creek (now Stoney Creek) and on 21 July 1735 he purchased another 160 acres on the SW side of the NW river beginning at Sarah Lewis' upper line in Bladen County. According to Arthur Brown's article, "Site of Dunn's Creek Quaker Meeting Located", in 1735 this was the site of an early Quaker settlement . . . .In 1741 he received land grants in the Brown Marsh Swamp in Bladen County and purchased several more pieces of land in this area between 1746 and 1754. . . " 729 WILLIAM JAMES SHIPMAN, SR. FAMILY OF BROWN MARSH . . ."The descendants of Daniel and his son John Daniel lived on Red Hill Road and Western Prong. They lived on their plantation "in the magnolias" on Red Hill Road". "The descendants of William James lived on their plantation located behind Brown Marsh Church on Poe-Elkins Road until it was sold". "Captain James Shipman, born 1751 at Brown Marsh, went to visit relatives near Western Prong and became very ill and died. He had to be buried in the Nance/Shipman Cemetery because the water was so high in the Red Hill Swamp that the family could not take him home.
