We will be placing a marker this Saturday (10/20) at 1:30 at the Atkinson cemetery for War of 1812 veteran Wilie Atkinson. The marker will read "Wilie Atkinson, Pvt, Capt John Nicolson's Co, NC Militia, War of 1812, Jan 25 1784, Aug 23, 1857". Directions from the cemetery book are: From Hwy 53, across from Singletary Lake, turn onto woods road known as Loop Trail and go straight toward the Cape Fear River for 6/10 mile, then turn left to cemetery. His name is pronounced "why-lee". Wilie Atkinson married Susannah Barnhill. They were the parents of Mary Atkinson Sykes, Ann Atkinson Sutton, Jane Atkinson Holton, and Wilie Alford Atkinson.
