In his later years, Kinion was totally deaf and 90% blind. The doctors of the day told him that his hearing loss was due to the noise of that artillery - which I wouldn't doubt at all. Before the war he had been a modestly successful farmer and miller. After the war, carpetbaggers eventually got his land and the mill, leaving him a broken man. He lived first with one child then another, never staying with one too long, and walked to the next one sleeping in barns or whatever inbetween. Wouldn't accept any help from anyone.
