There was a John Barfield of Sampson County that was tried convicted and hung for murder. The Late Jack Oates deals with that in his book Roots, Seeds, and Other Things Volume 1 & 2. Also a Mrs. Houk had found that the Joseph mentioned in those deeds was Joseph Oates Jr. she found a fourth petition along with those of John, James, and Jethro's. Their grandfather John Wiatt did not mention the children by name in his will, merely said the Children of my daughter Elizabeth Oates.
