    3. Hi Claudia. Which Heritage Book do you want checked at the Archives? I'm assuming that the Wilkes county you are asking about is North Carolina and not Georgia. Wilkes was named for John Wilkes "who was a violent opponent of the Tory party in England. He was not allowed to take his seat in Parliament to which he had been elected. The Americans imagined that he was suffering in the cause of liberty and named this county in his honor.." (# 115) Dee For details on sources used, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Claudia Cannady <CannadyGal@msn.com> To: <NCBLADEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 12:25 AM Subject: [NCBLADEN-L] Wilkes-Branch Dee Please do a look-up in the N.C. HERITAGE BOOKS AT THE GEORGIA ARCHIVES (A limit of 2 names as requested.) Issac WILKES John CANNADY/KENNEDY The Wilkes were in Bladen County, NC as their son Elijah was born there in 1794, but I was wondering if you know how Wilkes County got its name?
