My daughter also happens to work w/local law inforcement. I'll see what I can find for ya. Also try the NC Archives. Just put NC Archives in search bar, then to MARS, put in the Surname and it will give you everthing they have in the Archives with that name. May take a little while but will see what I come up with. The family immigrated to NC in 1770 per some family records in the Bahamas. Daniel had brothers named John, Archibald, Duncan, Gilbert, Jephtha, and POSSIBLY Alexander, as well as some sisters. John and Daniel stayed in BLaden Co after the Revolutionary war, the other brothers being banished to the Bahamas for Loyalist service in the war; the most famous being Maj. (later Lt Col) Archibald Taylor. Both John and Daniel are listed in the records of the Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church, and John and Daniel are both buried in the churchyard there. They are also both listed on the will of Archibald Kelly. 1. [NCBLADEN] Exchange info on Porters
    2. I'm looking for anyone who might be a descendant or researcher of John C. Porter b. Abt 1817 and d. 10/22/1845 in Bladen County, NC. I believe John C. Porter was born in Sampson Co, NC and moved to Bladen Co with his father, Henry Porter and brother, James N. Porter between 1840 and 1850. The three of them are named in the Feb 1840 Court minutes of Sampson Co, related to a sheriff's sale in Sampson Co, NC. James N. Porter and John C. Porter have another brother, William Henry Porter b. Abt 1825 and d. Aft 1880. William Henry Porter m. Mary S. McLelland. There are also two sisters but I don't have names for the sisters. John C. Porter m. Margaret Ann Melvin b. 1820 and they had one child, Sarah Margaret Porter b. 10/20/1845 who m. James Lucien Gilliland b.7/13/1840. John C. Porter apparently was in poor health when he wrote his will on 10/1/1845. He states "I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Margaret Ann Porter, the plantation I bought of James Chason, my black girls, Amy (Anny?) and Patty, during her natural life and then to the child she is now carrying." 3. Hi Iris, No, there are no marriage licenses. Marriage bonds were used before 1851 and thereafter marriage certificates were issued. It is my understanding that these are all on file in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. Bonds gave a lot more information concerning family members than did the certificates. I do know that 1868 was the beginning of the use of the word "licenses" (at least in Bladen County). It seems likely that the word "certificates" was simply a predecessor to the use of the word "licenses". Both certificates and licenses indicate that the marriage took place, but a bond was, in effect, a contract entered into prior to marriage and there is no guarantee that the marriage actually took place. Try the form on-line at www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/mail.htm for help in getting more information. They have marriage records from 1741-1868. The best that I can hope for in helping you is to find something in church records or newspapers. Let me check. Nope. I do have a record of the Melvin family in the Bladen Heritage book - 7 pages in fact. What specifically are you looking for? Dee All lookup requests will be permanently archived on the Bladen County Genweb site.
