    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Southard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.bladen/1356.2.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Margaret, Please write to me. I am very much interested in discussing with you the possibility that Kinnion may be descended from one of the ten CARROLL households enumerated in Sampson County, NC in the 1790 census. We have about 30 people now trying to find the background of these Carrolls. Almost 30 years ago I met Dr. Francis Carroll of Columbus County, NC, and he looked just like my father. I was shocked when I first saw him, and I told him of the family resemblance. He told me that he was a descendant of James Carroll of Sampson County. I was not interested in genealogy at that time, so I did not pursue that any further. Now I wish I had. I would like to get in touch with a member of Dr. Carroll's family and compare notes. Alexander was my known ancestor, and I now believe Dempsey, Sr. was his father with Stephen and Dempsey, Jr. as his brothers. James had adjoining property to Alexander. DNA tests show descendants of Dempsey Jr., Alexander, and Jesse match 37/37. Four more men match at least 35/37 with those three. It would be absolutely wonderful if we could find a male descendant of James who has the Carroll surname and has had no adoptions or non-paternal events in the lineage to take the DNA test. Even if no one is interested in the DNA test, I would like to compare notes on the Carrolls. Thanks, Lura CARROLL Southard luraj@triad.rr.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I am looking for a Richard King who was living with Thomas Brown Sr and Jr in Bladen/Robeson county on the 1770 tax list. He may have married Thomas' daughter, or may be just living with then. Sally Belcher, Bettey Matthews, Polly Low, Eliza Meredith; s. John, James, William; g. c. Mariah McMillan, Alexander McMillan. Jesse Vaughn's Buried Jug of Gold. Jesse Vaughn, the grandfather of J.W. Vaughn and a veteran of the Revolution, originally came from Burke County although he may have lived in Washington County, as the Vaughn family traditions tell of Indian hunters with their dogs being seen and heard across the Oconee River on the Wilkinson side. Jesse amassed great wealth in lands and money, at one time owning all the land from the B. H. Jackson Place to Commissioner Creek. It is said that he had two buckskins made into a sack in which he kept his gold and silver, but after his wife's death he got an earthern jug and filled it to the neck with water and then struck the neck so that it would break off smooth and he could cover it with a coffee pot lid. He is thought to have put his gold in this jug and buried it, as one day he called "Blind Alec" one of his slaves who was blind and had him take the jug and a shovel to a spot and bury the jug. A few years later, Vaughn was taken sick and called his son James, telling him he had something to say to him, but before he could do so he lapsed into unconsciousness from which he never recovered, dying not long afterwards. Search was made buckskins was found empty. "Blind Alec" told what he knew of the burial of the jug, but all he knew was that they had gone through a plum orchard, the thorns having stuck him as they went along. A most diligent search was made but the gold could not be found. Parties with a "Spanish Needle" searched for it as late as 1925 but the secret hiding place of Jesse Vaughn's jug of gold is still an unsolved mystery. >From Book # 848 Chapter: Family Heads 1805 Georgia Vaughn, Jesse, Burke Cty, RS Moved to Wilkinson Cty. >From Book # 660 James Chaney, Sr. of Montgomery Co., Ga., (lineage of his family) V. Need information that I think you can give me. I have Jesse Vaughn in Wilkinson County GA. Said to have received a bounty land grant in 1827 or 28. He died in 1829. I have thus far found no Revolutionary record for him. Did men get bounty land grants for any other reason than serving in the Revolutionary War? I am trying to prove patriot service for him. Where would be the best place to search for his military service? I have tried Georgia Archives. Just the land grant. Thanks for any consideration. Emma Sanders in AR

    3. Hi Bud, These were not wills for either Jason or Lott - they were mentioned in Wills as witnesses but there is no family connection to the deceased in either Will. Did you search the complete archives for this family? Dee All lookup requests will be permanently archived on the Bladen County Genweb site. 3. Hi Carolyn, I have a reference to her in my own THOMPSON file. She was shown as a witness to the nuncupative Will of William Thompson in Duplin County. The Will was written on June 9th, 1785 and filed June 11th. The other witnesses were John Thompson and Barsheba Thompson. Thompson is spelled Thomason, Thomson & Thompson. William Thompson names his sons, John (Carter) Thompson and Benjamin Thompson, and daughter Barsheba Thompson. Also named were grandsons Ezekial Carter and Lawrence Thomas. I have no idea why his wife, Elizabeth wasn't named as she was still living. That is the only female Winifred/Winifird shown in the Duplin Wills Book. A little background which may or may not help. This couples son-in-law John Brown Stephens/Stevens was from Bladen Co. and had ties in Robeson. John B married the daughter (Mary L. He is buried in the Shiloh Methodist Church cemetery in Bolton, Columbus Co, NC. A photo of his headstone is attached, though the dates are wrong. The headstone was erected by a relative who didn't know the exact dates. There is a stone for Jane also, but she is actually buried in Carvers Creek, though the exact location is no longer known (to the best of my knowledge.) I have thought his parents to be James & Charlotte CARROLL. White Lake Baptist Church was in an isolated rural area and there were barely 50 members. On the membership lists and in church minutes around 1850 were James and Charlotte Carroll and Kenion and Jane Carroll but no other Carrolls.
