    3. Are you referring to Anne Singletary that was the widow of James Singletary? If that is who you are referring to, I think that there has long been dissagreement over who her paarents were and who she was. 3. Well, I don't know whether any BARFIELD families show up on the GA list but, yes, indeed there is at least one BARFIELD/BAREFIELD in GA 1850. Her name was Winiford [Winifred?] BAREFIELD born NC ca 1800 living in household with two daughters, Anna Jane and Civil Sarah at the time of the Baker Co., GA census of 1850. Winiford was head of that household. Both her known daughters married sons of Gibson WEST. Winiford and girls lived next door to Gibson 1850. 1. [NCBLADEN-L] Re: BARFIELDS
    2. Dear Jo, I was delighted that Dee Thompson of the Bladen List forwarded your email on your "favorite unrelated family"---very delighted to have a cogent summary, with names, dates, and sources, of what is actually known versus what is speculation. Here is some of my information that is accurate. Some came from wills, some from family Bible, some from deeds: I am descended from Willis Barfield b abt 1748 d 1818 m. Elizabeth Cade d Oct 21, 1820. Children: Willis, Cade, Cornelius, Maban, Needham, Richard, Barna, Stephen, and one unnamed child. I don't know if my Willis is the same Willis that is son of the Richard Barfield, who left the will. We think he probably is. My ancestor Maban, son of Willis, was born Oct. 31, 1792 in Robeson/Bladen County, m 1) Abscilla Rowland Jan 20, 1822 Robeson/Bladen Co, NC 2) Widow Martha Purcell Clark Jan 15, 1852 Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas. (Martha Purcell was born Feb 14, 1809 Abbeville District, South Carolina, but seems to have grown up in Alabama--she married Patrick Calhoun Clark in Alabama in 1825.) Maban and Abscilla left North Carolina, moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi. Don't know when they left Bladen County, but their son, Needham died in Mississippi March 1834. Abscilla died and Maban moved on to Caldwell County, Texas--was there by 1852, when he married second wife. Maban died Oct 8, 1855 also in Caldwell County, Texas. Our family story is that "7 Barfields and 4 Cades" landed off the shore of North Carolina and had to swim ashore, having come from Scotland---and were also said to be "Scots-Irish." So I seem to be descended from one of those disappearing Barfields--and can contribute the Cade name as one associated with Barfield. I have wondered if the Barfields had connection with the Willis family, but only because of the given name "Willis" showing up a couple of times. Random information from books on other family lines, regarding early female Barfields: Mary BARFIELD b 1773 North Carolina m. William Curtis Jr. and died 1836 in Mississippi. William Curtis, Jr. was born about 1780 in the Natchez District, Miss--but William Curtis, Sr. was born about at Half Moon Swamp, Onslow County, North Carolina. (Got this from LINGERING SHADOWS by Jack Curtis and COLE FOOTPRINTS by Camille Denys.) Would love to know for sure whether my Willis Barfield is the same Willis named in Richard Barfield's will. Would like to know who Elizabeth Cade's parents were. What is the Sellers account of the Barfields? Do references to North Carolina Barfield's show up on the Georgia list? Barbara Jo

There is a Bladen County, North Carolina record of an inquest held on May 19, 1762 on which a Thomas Townsend served. I believe this to be our Thomas Townsend as Robert McConkey, his wife's brother also served on this inquest. Also serving on the inquest was a Jesse Townsend. I don't know who he was or what relation he had to Thomas, if any; although I do suspect there was a relationship. I have tried to find Jesse's name in other records of the time and general location, but have not found anything yet. Thomas also served on another inquest on May 12, 1766 in St. Martin's Parish in Bladen County, North Carolina. Both of these records are abstracted in the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal Volume I, 1975.

    1. [NCBLADEN-L] Four Willis Brothers
    2. My Willis family came to Southeast Virginia from England, in the Chesapeake Bay area, the same area that the pilgrims first settled. There in the 1740’ s, in Isle of Wight County and Nansemond County (now the city of Suffolk) was the place that Joseph Willis’ father, Agerton Willis, three uncles and one aunt called home. The family had come to America from Devonshire, England. I believe, but I cannot prove it beyond the shadow of a doubt, the English father of these five children was Benjamin Willis, Jr. (born circa 1690) and the grandfather was Benjamin Willis, Sr. (born circa 1670). The four Willis brothers were Joseph’s father Agerton Willis (born circa 1727; died 1777), and his brothers Daniel Willis (born circa 1716; died 1785), Benjamin Willis III (born circa 1725; died 1785), and George Willis (born circa 1730). The one known sister of these four brothers was Joanna Willis (born circa 1730; died 1791). Joanna married James Council (born circa 1716) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia in about 1751. James was the son of John Council and Benjamin Willis Jr.’s sister Josie Willis (born circa 1681), and grandson of Hodges Council. Hodges had also immigrated from Devonshire, England to America. In the early 1750’s, the family including James and Joanna moved south. Between 1740 and 1770, hundreds of Virginians moved to North Carolina as a result of the Virginia legislature passing a law requiring all non-residents to acquire ten acres of land for each head of stock ranging in the colony or to become citizens. Thus the family left Virginia, probably by sea, and landed down the coast at New Hanover (now named Wilmington), North Carolina. New Hanover had North Carolina’s most navigable seaport and even though it was not used much for transatlantic trade, this meant the area of the state was easily accessible from all other English settlements along the coast.
