Maben, born in Robeson/Bladen county, was the son of Willis of Bladen County. Jo Church has found evidence that Willis had land on Hogg Swamp--apparently Willis was in Marion County, South Carolina first. She also thinks Willis is the son that Richard mentions in his will. Don't have time right now to go back to the past emails to see where the Georgia Barfields came from---I guess Winifred could also have been a favorite name at that point???? Barbara Jo p.s. am sending a cc to my cousin Pinky, same generation as me Barfield descendent--to try to get her into the loop. Pinky, am sure you never heard Aunt Docia say anything about who Aunt Winnie might have been named for? Or you would have already mentioned it?

I am researching my family tree and I am trying to locate the slave records for the GIBBS Plantation where my great grandfather Lucien Beatty was born a slave in or around 1852/53. If you have any information that will help me, please e-mail. I have traced my Beatty name from old census records but I need help with slave records or wills from the Wm H. Beatty/Gibbs family records which shows the names of what slaves were willed over to the heirs.
FRuss I don't know much about the Beattys in Carvers Creek. I grew up directly across the Cape Fear in Kelly and my maiden name is Russ. There were some black Beattys in Kelly about my Dads b 1912 age. I'm not sure how it was spelled but I'll spell it like I said it. Telf. He had several sons that were in their teens in the late 1940s and early 50s. He always had a really fine car for that time and his teens gave it a work out. They lived on the Over Lyon Road which turned off right in front of my home and I think they tried to see how close they could come to turning it over in that sand without really doing it. I've heard they all grew up to be fine people. I certainly know their daddy was. Of course their were white Beattlys (wealthy for their time) over in the Rowan section of the county. I have always assumed the Beatys at Kelly came from the Beatty's at Rowan. My Daddy worked in the logging woods over at Carvers Creek. Lisbon, Council area when I was a child so I met many of the blacks he worked with and don't remember any Beatty's(but it has been a few years since I was a child). Do you know anything about your Russ's? I know there were 2 Russ brothers that came to Bladen in the mid 1730s, Thomas on the east side(Kelly) and John on the west side of the Cape Fear River. Some had some slaves but not many. I've only known one black Russ and I've always wanted to know his relationship to my line. His name was Uncle Tobe Russ and he was elderly when I was 5-10. He had one arm and a wife that I think was much younger than him. I always felt there was some connection to him and my grandaddy when they were younger. I can't remember what Grandaddy called Uncle Tobe but I know my daddy called him Uncle Tobe and Aunt ??can't remember her name. I know grandaddy always took care of Uncle Tobe in some ways. I certainly don't know about money but I can remember when Uncle Tobe or his wife needed to go to the doctor or shopping etc. grandaddy would assign one of his adult boys in their 30's to drive them to Elizabethtown or Wilmington. They did it too. I wish my kids minded so well. I don't think Uncle Tobe had any children. He must have lost his arm in some kind of accident because there was no evidence of a shoulder deformity. I think he was probably born in 1770-1790 timeframe and I've always assumed his name was Tobias. Sorry for the ramble but it was my thoughts when I read your Post. Kay Russ Andress

I just read your posting on the Beattys of Bladen County, I am seeking information about my great grandfather Lucien Beatty born a slave around 1852/1853. I have traced him living in Carvers Creek, Bladen County which about 5 miles from Lake Wacamaw. If you have any information concerning the slave names and plantation history, please email me so I can contact you. Thank you for your help.
Thank you. J. Williams
I have read your message and I am seeking any information on the Beattys from Carvers Creek, Bladen County, North Carolina. I have been able to trace my great grandfather Lucien Beatty back to 1900. I know he was born a slave in or around 1852/53 but I do not have any information concerning who owned the plantation in Carvers Creek, Bladen County, North Carolina. Any information that you have will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bob, I just logged onto my computer this afternoon and found your response and I just want you to know that I don’t think my feet have touched the ground since then. I am so happy! I have so much information on the Sims family and I will be happy to share with you what I have on William Sims children up to the current time if you are interested. I have looked for the longest time for information on McKenzie and his line. Do you know who he was named for? McKenzie is Scottish, isn’t it? Please, please send me what you have and let me know if you would like for me to send mine to you, OK? Do you prefer a gedcom? Tell me about yourself---where you’re from and how long you’ve been searching for family information too. I’m dying to hear from you. I also tried to send you an e-mail at your aol address and it is always bounced. Do you have an e-mail address that you will share with me? I would be happy to have you contact me personally. Sincerely, Joyce

IT'S ON THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For those of you who have already notified Lib that you want a Bladen Heritage Book you don't have to do anything else. If you haven't yet e-mailed Lib, this will probably be your last chance to get this wonderful glimpse of Bladen. If you're not certain whether you're on the list for the book, just ask Lib and I'm sure she will be glad to check. Please remember that Lib and Billie, among others, have dedicated their lives to Bladen County history and all they get in return is our gratitude.
