Hi Y'all, Since I am down to four e-mail lookups and seven Georgia Archives lookups I'm rewarding myself. I have three very interesting books that aren't on the bibliography list. They are the "Index of North Carolina Ancestors (volumes I and II)" and a strange one that may be fabulous, "Migrations Actual and Implied Volume One". The ancestors books might give you a name, date of birth, place of birth, county of birth, date of death, place of death, county of death, county where they lived, date of marriage, place of marriage, county of marriage, name of spouse, and the code number of the ancestor file in the North Carolina State Archives. A large number of the entries don't have any counties listed. EXAMPLES Charles Baldwin was born in 1787 in Bladen County, NC. He died in 1848 in Columbus County, NC. He married c1810 Amelia Kelly in Bladen County, NC. Ancestor File # 60403. Josiah Lewis was born in 1728 in Craven County, NC. He died c1808 in Bladen County, NC. He married Ann Mullington in 1750 in New Hanover County, NC. They lived in New Hanover County, NC. Ancestor File # 12090. The migration book shows a probable intention of moving into, out of and within the state of North Carolina. EXAMPLES Guilford County, N.C. Deed Book 1 (1771-1784) p. 222 - 15 November 1773 John Underhill and wife, Hannah, to Benjamin Coffin of Nantuckett County, Massachusetts (taylor), now residing in Guilford County - 140 acres on Polecat Creek. p. 227 - 7 December 1773 William Triplett and wife, Eleanor, to Samuel Cobaen of York County, Pennsylvania - 100 acres in Guilford County. p. 245 - 24 September 1772 John Cheedle of Goochland County, Virginia to John Stewart of Guilford - 440 acres in Guilford County on Wolf Branch of Deep River. p. 405 - 26 July 1777 John Buster to Hugh Challes of Pittsylvania County, Virginia - 420 acres on Wolf Island Creek . I have attempted for three years or more to identify the parents of my gggrandfather, Samuel Jenkins Taylor, who was born in Robeson County, NC, in 1823. The only clue I have is that his parents were S & A Taylor of Robeson Sounty. Thanks for you willingness to help. There is a Will for Nathan Johnson of Sampson County (1851), (son of the above William?, brother of Joel and Joab?) who lists his sons Bizzell, Nathan , Robert and Allen, and son-in-law William Fryer. My only source for early Johnston settlers is a Johnson Family History, which was compiled and published many years ago, but without any documentation. That publication shows my ancestor to be Thomas Johnston, of Ulster, Ireland, who emigrated to the Albemarle district of NC in 1680. His son was Jonathan. The only mention of Jonathan's son Joab was said to be in the will of Jonathan's brother, William, who left land along the Neuse River to Joab and his brothers, Ashby, Soloman and Jacob. Joab was said to be the father of Joel Johnston, Sr. My research indicates to me there may have been another family with similar names that settled in Johnston County, and that may have confused earlier researchers. Although I cannot document this history, I will not discard it without evidence of other ancestry. Thanks you for your efforts. Do you know if there is any record of the family names of those Scotch-Irish settlers who came to Duplin-Sampson County with Henry McCulloch from Ulster in 1736? They established themselves along the tributaries of the Cape Fear River, at Sarecta, Kenansville, Goshen Swamp and the Black River. Perhaps Grove Church, which they founded, has a record. The family names I am researching are Pollock, Johnston, Ward and Edens, and I have wondered if some of them came to America with that group, since Pollock and Johnston are Scottish names. The Pollocks and Wards were certainly present at Goshen in he 18th century. My Johnston ancestor was Joel Johnston, Sr, born about 1755 along the Black River in southern Sampson. He lived most of his life in northern Bladen County, near Johnsontown. The family cemetery is just east of there, in Bladen State Forest. I wish I knew his parents names; family oral history indicates his father was Joab Johnston from the Albemarle District, but we have too little evidence of Joab to confirm that theory. Trish, I just saw the message where you had asked Dee about George Shelton. I also noticed that you are in OK. She is however present in the 1870 and would marry Clemant about 1883. Based on this information I am adding the siblings shown in the census with this family. I believe Anna in the 1860 census listed as wife is Anna Sophia Davis and Mary E. in the 1870 may have been a second wife, although there is no proof of that fact. Nadine, Thank you for the information you sent re. Gooden. I am sorry I have waited so long to respond. You response came in on my laptop and I left it at my home last week when I left to go where I live and work during the week. This was a nice surprise when I returned this weekend. Thank you so very much. Lum Gooden is too young as he was would be 11 years old when Laura Etta was born. I did find her mother was Mary Russ that married Christopher Gooden. That gave me the clue that will help. However , could you be referring to the Red Springs Academy for Girls, which may have been part of Bladen at one time, but would now be part of Robeson County?
